Show SOU South Cache Courir Crop Rotation Published Ever; Friday at Hyrum Professor R. E. Vaughan of the University of Wisconsin in a recent lecture before the Experiment Station Staff of the Utah Agricultural College said that crop rotation was the first essential to the canning pea industry of his State. Half the canned peas of the United States are produced in Wiseorsin. Along with such an enormus pea acreage it is but natural that some serious diseases of the pea plant should develop. These diseases would entirely destroy the industry if a systematic rotation were not practiced. It has taken the sugar beet nematode to convince some of our Utah farmers that beets should not be grown continuously on the same land. Must we pay the same price to learn to rotate alfalfa? That crop rotation actually increases yields of all crops has been demonstrated in Utah and Cache County. The county agent in Utah County has assisted 54 farmers in planning their rotation systems and keeping production records for the last six years. Their increased yields resulting from this practice were reported as follows: beets, increase of 4.28 toas per acre, alfalfa 1 ton per acre, wheat 12.8 bushels per acre, oats 18.2 bushlels per acre, barley 18.3 bushels, and potatoes 66.2 busIn Cache County 21 hels per acre. with the farmers have e five for ina years county agent rotation practice. 'Their acre yields last year exceeded average yields 2 tons for beets, 5 bushels for wheat,' 1 ton for alfalfa, 1144 pounds for canning peas. Safety First' for the Utah farmer means crop rotation.
