As set forth in the i constitution of the Indiana Federation of Farmers associations, it Is the purpose of the association to protect the economic,, business, educational, legislative and social interests of the farmers of the state, and when these phases of the work are being considered, it necessarily involves the activities of the farm women. The Indiana directors believe that it is not necessary to have a separate organization, duplication of officers, or anything of that kind, but merely the united effort of farm men and women in the same organization. In Indiana it has been arranged so that a farmers wife or daughter, where there is already one' fully paid up member In the family, may be-- , come a member of the local township, county, state and national organization with the payment of $2.50 annually. This fee is divided up with $1 for the county or township. $1 for the Indiana Federation of Farmers, Associations and 50 cents for the This plan American Farm bureau. of organization was worked out at a state meeting of farm women held in Indianapolis, with the recommendations that a committee of farm women, one representing each of the ten federation districts, be selected to suggest such additions to the progress of work of the state organization as would take in the interests of the farmer from all angles, as outlined above, in a way that would enlist the of the eninterest and tire community. This committee of ten in their recommendations provided for the increased Interest in social activities of the community with a special educational, and health program. Although the total, enrollment of farm women members in the Indiana Federation of Farmers Associations has not reached large numbers, as yet, still the interest is growing rapidly and where aroused to the needs and conditions, they are willing to give their time and talents along with the men, to establishing an organiza tion whose object is to insure a more permanent, stabilized and profitable agriculture for the generations to come, which means the essentials for the establishment of home and community life of the highest type. Near eastern developments are causing the British government increased anxiety. The cabinet at set informally over the week-en- d Chequers Court, the country residents of the prime minister. Austen Chamberlain, Lord Brikenhead, (Sir Robert Stevenson Horne and Winston Spencer Churchill have been Lloyd Georges guests there, and all through Sunday the telephones between Chequers Court and the foreign office in London have been humming with consultations with the various government departments. The principal news of Sunday brought by Associated Press dispatches, is of a conference between Sir Harry Lamb, the British High commissioner, and Mustapha Kemal Pasha at Smyrna, in which the nationalist leader showed little disposition to regard allied warnings unless the allies were willing to return Thrace to Turkey. Moreover, Kenal demanded complete withdrawal of the Greek forces from the Tchatalja lines. The latest advice from Constantinople indicate serious allied preparations for a possible attempt by the Kemalists against the neutral zone. This' may serve to explain the somewhat sudden change in the attitude of the British government from Friday, when it was explained that no considerable reinforcements would be sent to the near east unless the Turks gave evidence of an intent to cross into Europe, when the British government issued an important statement of policy, showing immediate steps to meet possible Kemalist action. This sudden change in attitude has caused grave misgivings an certain quarters. The Daily Mail Monday published under the editorial caption: This New War, an article stigmatizing the policy set forth in the statement as bordering upon insanity. It declares that the British public will learn with dismay and astonishment that Lloyd George and his colleagues are organizing a new war in the near east, are trying to drag Jugoslavia and Rumania into the fray and are sending British troops into battle shoulder to shoulder with the dejected Greeks. It adds : The most astonishing disclosure in this amazing declaration of government policy is that apparently Lloyd George already has sent a fiery cross around the overseas dominions, asking them to send contingents to join in this mad war. The Mail contends that Mustapha Kemals peace terms are not far removed from the terms propounded Curzon, in behalf of the allies on March 30th, when Lord Curzxm, line should suggested the be the Turkish frontier in Europe. It declares that all agree that Constantinople must be returned to the Turks and Kemal Pasha, and now Lloyd George is trying to rehis trieve shattered reputation, through the downfall of his policy, by arranging a wanton, war find supposing that he can arouse the nation as' Gladstone did in the seventies of last century about Bulgaria. While the Mail has known proclivities, it voices an opinion which is quite prevalent. Great Britains one true interest is freedom of the straits, which can be attained by negotiations, the paper continues. There is not the smallest need to plunge Europe into war and alienate the whole Mohammedan world about the straits. -- neighbor! securities are nothing more or less than havens for the rich who wish to invest their money and escape paying their proportion of the expenses of the government, said H. C. McKenzie, tax expert of the American Farm Bureau federation, recently commenting upon the house resolution Introduced by Representative Green of Iowa which would do away with all e federal bonds. People with large incomes who formerly lent large sums on farm mortgages have entirely retired from this field of investment owing to the fact that a 5 per cent bond will give them as much Income as the income from a 10 per cent taxable mortgage. The annuai loss in taxes to the federal government Is at least $600,. 000,000 per year, according to Professor Seligman of Columbia university. In addition states having income tax' laws lose a very large amount. The net result Is to Increase the taxes on all other property. The last report of the New York state tax commission shows that while 25 per cent of the Incomes of the people of the state comes from real property, 70 per cent of the taxes are paid from this source.
