Show NO. 21 Hyrum, Cache County, Utah, Friday, April 16, 1920. VOL. X. S. C. S. H. MAKING OCEAN TRAVEL SAFER That Is Expected Greatly to Lessen the Danger and Annoyance of Fogs. Device Presents Opera It Each year the S. C. High School favors the public of the South end of the County with some production ither a drama or a musical. This year the school attempted a performance of higher class in a musical way than ever before. Through the efforts of Mr. N. W. Christiansen. head of the Music Dept., the and opera was a 'decided success, and of Mendon thanks to the people to Hyrum, the two towns played date, the houses were packed with Special acappreciative audiences. knowledgement is given to Miss Florence Thomas, who with untiring effort assisted the dancing girls. The dancing of Miss Thomas and her dancing girls was most pleas- ing and graceful. To pick the stars wold be a difficult task, but, among those who should receive special mention, we . comment as follows: Prof. C. R. Johnson as Caspian, presented his usual personality and won the audience when the first note from his voice came from behind the scenery. , Harriet Christiansen as Bulbul, presented a very stately appearance, receiving frequent applause from the audience. Ralph Hansen wag thoroughly at home on the stage and took the part of the Monarch very well. Grace Wilson as the courj: Chaperon, was very natural in her part as a reaT coquette. Ebba Petersen, Russ Stuart, Clark Stephens Irvin Bird, were well received and carried their parts in an excelof honor s lent manner. and the peddlers were exceedingly entertaining, as also the lords, ladies of the court and the housemaids. Special mention may be made of the music furnished by the orchestra which was of high order and much appreciated. Taken the performance as a whole the school and the. music depart ment are to be congratulated upon the general excellence and tone of the entire cast. The opera is to be repeated in next Tuesday evening, Hyrum April 20th, and we recommend that - States navy and shipping interests generally that a device recently invented will prove successful in overcoming the annoyances and delays caused by fogs. The navy department recently signed a contract with Earl C. Hanson of Los Angelos for the use of his contrivance, and practical tests will be made nt once at the New London naval base and later with some of the largest liners in the world In the Ambrose channel of New York harbor. The Hanson device is a simple one. A cable is laid in the center of the ship channel. Through it is sent an electric current of low frequency, which, through the "listening instrument on board ships, gives off a sound of certnin pitch which cannot be mistaken for any. other sound, ' The ship hugs the cable from harbor line to the dock. On tiie bridge and lu the captains cabin listening devices like telephone receivers are placed and attached by wires to the bull of the ship. The ship follows the course of the cable. Any variation away from the cable Is indicated by visible Indicators, which show in feet the distance away from the cable, and the ship is then put back over the cable by the rudder, in the usual way. By the ear receivers the indicators inny be confirmed at all times. Vessels going into port will use one cable; those coming out another. The sound of each is diifer-en- t and there can be no confusion, and, therefore, no collision.. -Along the cable, at mile intervals, a section is insulated with lead. Through this no sound can come, and, therefore, the man on listening duty can tell instantly how far the ship has progressed and by the cable chart in front of him can tell where the cable turns and how the ship must be steered to follow the puyving of. the cable and the center of the channel.
