Dr. E. G. Gowans, education for the state, has sounded the first gun in this campaign in his monthly letter to superintendents and health supervisors of the state. The Utah Public Health Association is very heartily in favor of such examination and has offered to Dr. Gowans its toward the goal set. Any city, town or district , may set a day or more aside for the medical examination of every adult person and do a splendid hit of prevention work. It is almost unnecessary to say that if every adult in the state of Utah w?re examined by a physician many illnesses would be discovered and prevented. Such an examination, once a year, will be the rule in a few years at the utmost. Many of the big industrial corporations have come to realize that it means a real saving in dollars and cents to have the men and women in their plants and factories and offices examined by competent physicians and large numbers employ physicians for this purpose and also to examine all applicants for work. Production is increased, men and women rehabilitated and the general morale of the force boosted. The Utah Public Health Association hopes to induce many manufactures of Salt Lake City, and Utah to have a day or two set aside this yeftr for a medical examination The Utah Public Health Association extends herewith an invitation to any city, school district, business house or industrial plant to hold a physical examination day or days and offer any aid in its power to futher the plans. NATIONAL POLITICS The political situation surely is interesting. Viewed from an angle of the declaration of Mr. Hoover that he support the party that stands for the League of Notions, is unique and coming from a man supported by the Curtis publications. the NewYork World, and other big newspapers. It is doubtful if any other probable candidate has ever refused to identify himself with any party. Among the Senators there is a perfect avalanche of candidates for the Republican nomination,, and General Wood and a number of Governors of States have their lightning rods aloft. Among the Republicans there ap- -' pears to be a cocksuredness born apparently of the rout of the Democrats with reference to the treaty, and the disorganization among Democratic leaders as shown in the ren fusal of the party eaucus of to endorse the Presidents proposal for universal military training. That the Democrats are somewhat discouraged is evidenced by the fact that no pep is being put behind suggestions to nominate any leader in the party. By J. E. Jones Wash., D.
