BARROWS Home Management Specialist Old brown linoleums may be made the foundation of a cheerful interior by proper application of a few ounces of paint. The following methods have proved satisfactory where directions have been carefully observed: If the floor is uneven the linoleum should be taken up and the ridges plained down. If some spots are getting very thin, such pieces should be cut out with good straight edges and pieces of better linoleum cut exactly the same size and glued down with waterproof linoleum cement and not tacked down. When the floor is thoroughly dry the linoleum should be perfectly cleaned with a soap or soap powder strong enough to cut all grease; it should be allowed to dry right down through the linoleum. The life of the resurface-in- g is dependent upon this thorough cleansing and absolute drying. It may be necessary to protect the surface by spreading newspaper about while the linoleum dries. When these are taken up the floor should be carefully dusted. In painting a floor always work your way toward a door. There are many makes of reliable floor enamels on the market which dry rapidly and it is advisable to use one of these or a good floor color in lacquer. Careful attention should be given to the selection of colors that will harmonize with other colors used in the room; also, it should be remembered that the floor should be the darkest color in the room. If a plain surface is not desired there are many ways of produring a somewhat patterned effect. Borders may be outlined and painted in attractive hues to harmonize with the foundation color or after foundation coats have dried other colors harmonizing or contrasting may be variously applied. (Editors Note: Next month Mrs. Barrows will give examples of refinish-m- g colors and hints on the laying of new linoleum.) Those Jews who, toward the end of the Middle ages, left Germany for the Slavic lands (Bohemia, Poland, Galicia and Lithuania) spoke the middle high German of their places of origin and up to the Sixteenth century wrote It quite correctly, although they employed the Hebrew alphabet The absence of active intercourse with Germany, however, led In time to a process of simplification of morphology and syntax. Kathleen Millay fa Harpers AT I North Main Street, M Variety of Tongues liddlsh Is a middle German dialect Kentucky history records the "Bat- tle of the Blue Licks" as the bloodiest engagement between the whites and the Indians of the pioneer days. It was In this battle of August 19, 1782, that 450 Shawnee Indians, led by British and Canadians and the notorious renegade Simon Glrty, ambushed 200 comrades of Daniel Boone and slew and scalped more than half of them, Including Boones youngest son, Israel. Recent dedication of two memorials by Kentucky called attention to the fact that this battle, while a great disaster, yet aroused the pioneers to the danger of their extermination west of the Alleghenies. Reorganization of the whites followed and with reinforcements and supplies from Virginia the Indians ultimately were driven beyond the Ohio river, never to return.
