Addressed By President Brimhall of B. Y. U. Valedictory and Principals Address T h i r t y- w o Graduates. -t HYRUM, Utah, May 15. Dr. George H. Brimhall, president of the Brigham Young University of Provo, Utah, faced a closely packed assemblage and the largest class ever graduated from the South .Cache high school when he arose to deliver the commencement address at the seventh annual commencement of the school, held in the specious Third ward hall at Hyrum. Sunday evening Mry 15, 1921. His address was thoroughly in accord with the ideal of the South Cache high school, to train for life, as expressed by Mr. H. R. Adams in the principals remarks and was slightly anticipated, in one phase at least, by Miss Fern Nielsen, of Hyrum, in the valedictory. The sincere, homely advice given by Dr. Brimhall to the graduates was in perfect accord with spirit of his audience invoked by several stirring musical numbers which preceded the commencement address. . The commencement exercises opened with a selection by the school chorus, Hurrah for the Flag by Wagner. President Joseph White of the Hyrum Stake offered the invocation followed by a violin solo, Cavatina by Roy Halverson. Mr. Halverson, one of the graduates, succeeded in satisfying the musical taste of his hearers as the appreciative applause showed. H. R. Adams of the G Principal igh school traced briefly the history of the school in the Principals remarks. He showed clearly the remarkable growth which the school has experienced since the first year was given ten years ago. He declared that the hearty cooperation between faculty, students, Board of Education, and the schools supporters the parents, was the cause for the enviable position of the South Cache high school. But there is still room for improvement and growth, continued the principal, I am sure that although the faculty of the school is not dissatisfied, that it is unsatisfied. I would urge upon you all the importance of being - unsatisfied. We the faculty of ;he South Cache high school are united in the desire to build up a still stronger and more universally serviceable school. We are unsatisfied with our work so far and I say that there is always cause for unsatisfaction in - any state which is not perfection itself. The nice distinction between unsatisfaction and dissatisfaction drawn by Principal Adams expressed the feeling of the entire faculty of the school. Miss Harriet Christiansen, a resident of Hyrum and a member of the class of 21, sang a beautiful song, Where My Caravan has Rested accompanied by the violin and pifcno. Progress is marked by Sacrifice was adopted as her theme for the Valedictory by Miss Fern Nielsen. Miss Nielsen won. the right to deliver the farewell address because of the fact that she had scored the most points in scholarship during her. four years at the high school of any student. She developed the subject briefly by showing that true (Continued on Page Three) |
