For this purpose THE BUCKET BRIGADE ; Which on former occasions had rendered snch valuable setvice, was called into requisition, and, though there was a scarcily of buckets, soon succeeded ia.directing a stream of water on the roofs of the three buildings exposed. The shoeshop being a light structure it was thought best to remove it, and this was done by a dozen or more men furning it over bodily with their hands and rolling it over an embankment thirty_or forty fect away. As it went crashing down the bank it fell to pieces, leaving’its owner out in the street with his bench and tools. The fire by this time was beginning to die down, leaving the stables to the north mainly outof danger and allowing the entire force to be concentrated on the little block of buildingsin reach of the flames. A little good management was all that was required to keep the fire in its present bounds and again save the town. The force of men fighting the fire was not large, but it was well managed and worked vigorously. There were a good many spectators who did not take any active part in the operations and seemed to think that as it was Only Chinamen who were being burned out the Joss was of no great consequence. The town, however, was in imminent danger and had the atmosphere not been unusually calm the fire: would unquestionably have apread beyond the iimits which at present define the burnt district. A wind from the southwest, such as biows almost every day, would have carried the sparks and blazsng litter to the northeast and most likely completed the destruction of the town. a ———————~-— abled price for the next thirty days. immediately. with a competency.
