Christensen wants to divide the commercial lot into 1/ 3-acre lots, making 7 lots. He said the change would be less dense then the planned business lots, thus decreasing density in the county. Initially, the only issue seemed to be a boundary line adjustment. But questions arose as to whether it was a boundary line adjustment or a plat amend- last surgery to cover the very thick scar at her hairline. Harkey's bright eyes and enormous smile were enough to draw attention away from the scarv though. The tutor remembers leaving that first tutoring appointment in awe of Harkey's tenacity. Harkey became a hero to her tutor from that moment on. Whenever things became difficult for the tutor, she would say, "If Marcia can do it, I can do it." Harkey would not be held back. Harkey's tutor remembers, "No other student worked as hard. Often, her essays would go through 6-8 revisions because she wanted to make sure she was submitting her best work. Marcia would always apologize for what she called 'pestering,' but she'll never know how much she taught me." Anderson says,. "What made her stand out among her peers is her motivation to do whatever it takes to achieve her degree. If it meant taking a class over, or studying extra hours or meeting with a tutor to really grasp the material she was willing to do it." Harkey "simply would not be denied in obtaining her education," Anderson says, "and her example exemplifies that no matter how great the obstacle ... those obstacles can be overcome in large part by. the desire and motivation of the human spirit." Harkey started her college career as a psychology major. Cless Young and his psychology class were favorites of hers. She began hoping to become a school counselor so she could help other students like herself. With her counselor, Sandra Lanier of Student Support Services, she changed her major to social work. Harkey is concerned with the decisions she is making. To that end she is planning to volunteer at a women's crisis center and to job shadow other social work professions to see where her interest lies. For as many obstacles as Harkey has already overcome, her epilepsy and seizures are still affecting her life. Even with all she's gone through, she still has to take a lot of anti-seizure medication to be able to function. She describes her current health as "not good." As a result she is traveling to Seattle to meet with a specialist to decide on a future course of treatmen L Harkey, who will turn 23 years old on May 19, has been accepted to Utah Valley State College for the fall of 2006. With disappointment she says, "I think I might have to take it easy for awhile because of my health." She is checking the extension programs offered at Snow College Richfield, hoping she might find some social work and-breakfast inn. At the April 18 commission meeting, Christensen asked the commission to allow a plat that had been reserved for condominium and commercial development to be changed to permit him to develop regular home lots, except for one lot, which he intends to sell for the B&B. ment. Commissioner Claudia Jarrett couldn't see it.as a boundary line adjustment, with County Attorney Ross Blackham agreeing. Christensen said he would rather make the plat change than risk losing his potential buyer for the B&B. Christensen hopes to have the plat change reading for the May 17 zoning meeting and then to return to the commission. Harkey describes Evans as "a good guy, really nice, and even though I hate to describe a guy this way, but really sweet and really down-to-earth." In the fall of 2002, Harkey started school at Snow College in Ephraim. She describes the experience as "drowning at first, but then my body developed the ability to deal with the pressure." The surgeries alleviated the seizures but left it harder for Harkey to learn and remember, two skills crucial to the success of any college student. "It takes me awhile to catch on," says Harkey. "Only one of the surgeries made it easier for me to think and learn afterwards. All of the others just made everything harder." Her epilepsy qualified her for assistance from Student Support Service, a federally funded program serving students with disabilities and other qualifying needs. Through Student Support Services director, Mike Anderson, tutors were arranged as necessary.
