This is one election in which every vote counts. The election is called the Mass Meeting Caucus. It's a meeting held every two years at which some of the most important political decisions are made. This is the meeting where you and/or your neighbors will elect delegates to represent you at the county and state party conventions for the next two years. These delegates will determine who your party will put forward as candidates for Stale Senator and Representative, county commissioner, sheriff and other offices in the primary elections and possibly even in the general electiorf in November. In addition, these delegates will also be the ones who choose your party's leadership. Regular party members don't get to vote for the party chairperson and other local and state officers, only the del- egates gel to do that. The bottom line is that on Tuesday, you {if you are there) and a few of your neighbors will be electing people who will be casting votes in your name for the next two years. AI ittle known fact is that a few people can make these important decisions for you if you don't attend your caucus. In some precincts as few as five to ten people show up and end up making the decisions for hundreds of voters. It's die one time when a vole to elect someone might be counted as a one in five vole instead of one vote in thousands like it is in general elections. Your vote at the caucus has a huge impact not only your community, but of the county and the stale. It can make a difference in whether or not Sanpete County residents— instead of candidates from outside Sanpete—are elected to state office. Your vote can determine who will run for commissioner or sher- iff in the next general election or who the next party chairperson may be. Your vote will never mean more than it does at your neighborhood caucus. Meetings will be held Tuesday. March 21 at 7 p.m. A complete list of Republican meeting locations is available at www.sanpctccouiityicpublicans.com. The website also has precincl maps showing every precinct in every town in the county. If you don't have access to the Internet, call the County Clerk's office at 835-2131 during business hours. In the evening you can call me, Steve Clark, at 436-9707. I will also tell you aboul the "Sanpete County Candidates First" pledge and why that pledge is so important to Sanpcte County when you cast your vole for delegates from your precinct. Steven J. Verl got real excited this week. After the mailman left, Verl pulled out the dunners and ads and there was a real official looking envelope from the government. It was different from the brown envelopes that we get our Social Security checks in, and right away Verl started jumpin' to conclusions. He went to the kitchen table and opened it and inside was a check made out to him for over $5900.00. Verl called me up and told me to get over to his place as fast as I could. I went out and warmed the truck up, but with the cold 1 didn't dare put it in gear until the oil warmed up a little. When I got over to Verl's house he was sittin1 at the table looking at a new ad from Big O and he had a grin a mile wide. I asked him what was goin1 on and he slid the envelope across the oilcloth on the table and I opened it and there it was, just as big as life. I asked him what it was for, and he said he didn't know, but it was a government check and he planned to cash it that day. I looked in the envelope and found another paper that explained the check was from some government office who was trying to track down victims of the hurricane down in Louisiana and they had a hard timefindinghim but hoped he was doing alright with his situation, under the circumstances. I told Verl the government thought he was in the hurricane and the check was to help with his expenses and the only decent thing was to sent it back. He looked at me like I was nuts and said it's the only time in his life where the government was giving something back instead of bleedin' him dry with taxes. Verl had a point, but I told Verl that right was right and he had no call to keep that money. He never said a word, but he put it up in the cupboard by the coffee can and closed the door. He turned back and looked at me, I could see he had no plans to send it back. Kids eat free Family Night: Monday, between 5 & 8 p.m. 61 S.
