Wales car show, poker run build crowds for small town party CENTERFIELD COURIER BY ELVA JENSEN 528-3382 CENTERFIELD—Mardell and Miles Jensen’s nieces and nephews from Ogden and Las Vegas attended the Mormon Miracle Pageant Friday night, June 24. On Saturday, Miles and Celia Jensen joined the relatives for a luncheon at Mardell and Elva’s home in Centerfield. The parents of the nieces and nephews were Gail and Clarice Jensen, both of whom have passed away. Marcia and Sergio and family joined in the group to get better acquainted with the cousins. We extend our sympathy to Donna and Bernell Manwill, Charlotte and Duane Follett, Tanya and Craig Tophara, Saundra and Clyde Coates, Paula and John Merchant, Derek and Dana Andreason, Desslie and Vickie Andreason, and Darron and Cindy Andreason at the passing of their father. Ray Andreason died June 24, just five months after his wife Verna passed away. Graveside services were held at the Salina Pioneer Cemetery June 27. Ray lived in Salina. Many of the members of the Centerfield Wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped with the Fourth of July celebration. All of the other wards in the Gunnison LDS Stake helped with the food for a roast beef dinner served to a large crowd that gathered at the Gunnison Park Friday night, June 2. Doris and Michael Beck headed the committees. Our amazing Carla Anderson had a special day June 25. She didn’t want to have a party for her 96th birthday, but she had one anyway. She had a lot of phone calls during the day, and her family started to arrive at 9 a.m. Many family members and friends just kept coming and going all day, even until 11 p.m. Carla and her husband Miles raised four children: Maurine, Gerta, Clyde and Hal. Many of her grandchildren have been very close to Carla. Miles passed away several years ago. Carla’s cousin, Alice Belliston from Nephi, came to spend the day with Carla and her family They had a great day laughing, visiting and reminiscing. Carla was born in Denmark, but came to America when she was a young girl with a twinkle in her eyes, a great sense of humor and a story to tell. Carla has cheered many people along her road to 96. Best wishes from all of us. Delia Bunnell and her sister, Donna Anderson of Redmond, along with their brother Max and his wife, Rose, of West Valley, attended the Allred reunion in Spring City on Saturday, June 25. Their ancestor, James Allred, settled Spring City. GUNNISON GOOD NEWS BY KAREN PRISBREY 528-7710 By Kathy Lin Eggleston Staff writer WALES—The “WalesSanpete County Cruise-In and Poker Run COOL Summer Nights” is set to roll this Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Wales town park. What began as an effort to put some oomph into Wales’ hometown summer celebration has now taken on a life of its own. When Teri Morris of Wales came up with the idea of a car show to attract larger crowds to Wales Days, she had no idea that the crowd would get so big the show would become an event in itself. “Every year our little town would have its annual Wales Days celebration. It’s fun, but the crowds were not there,” Morris said. “With a town of only about 200 people, we knew we needed something to draw people from the surrounding areas.” With the help of her husband, Glen, an “old car nut,” Morris organized the town’s first car show in 2001, which was held during the annual summer event. “The show only had 10 cars, and six of them were ours,” Morris said. But the annual car show and parade down the main street in Wales soon left little room for the Wales Days celebration. “We had so many coming out to the event that we filled the park and the side streets,” Morris said. In 2004 the Cruise-In and Poker Run became its own event. Last year, Morris teamed up with Ilene Roth, wife of the late “Big Daddy” Ed Roth, who was fa- GUNNISON—Just a little reminder from the Fire department: grasses and weeds are starting to dry out and the brush will be tinder dry and ripe for starting unwanted fires. Parents, watch where your children are lighting their fireworks, lets hope for a safe July celebrations. Bonnie Nay reported on her granddaughter Jessica Nay’s marriage at the Manti Temple on June 11 to Ryan Morris of Mesa, Ariz. Jessica is currently teaching communication courses at Arizona State University while working towards obtaining her master’s degree. Jessica’s parents are Dr. Richard and Lori Nay. Friends and family of Carla Anderson helped celebrate her 96th birthday on June 25. Still active and eager to do for herself, Carla bakes bread, cookies and cakes, and maintains her yard, even taking time to pull up morning glories. Her daughters Gerda Caldwell and Maurine Christensen, along with brothers Clyde of Wyoming and Hal of Salt Lake, are grateful for her good health and eagerness to be independent. Happy Birthday Carla! MaeDawn Larson and Duella Christenson have received news of the birth of a new great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Christensen. Her father is Robert, the son of Earlene Christenson of California, and Richard Christenson, also of California. Congratulation MaeDawn and Duella! Congratulations to Andrea and Richard Johanson who were married at the Manti Temple on Saturday, June 2. Many family members and friends joined in with celebrating their special day. Welcome home to Elder Gavin Ashton, son of Michelle and Brett Ashton. Gavin will report on his LDS mission at the Gunnison First Ward on July 10. CORRECTIONS ... Roth and Morris held the firstever “Rat Fink poker run” that included a tour of the world famous Rat Fink museum in Manti and tours of Mt. Pleasant City’s Native Wines winery. “We had more than 60 cars that year,” Morris says. Now more than 120 cruisers are in the local area.
