Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, June 15, 2005 TO THE EDITOR... TO Concerned for Barclay Mechanical As a business owner in Manti, I am very concerned about the fate of Barclay Mechanical. I cannot believe that Manti City is being forced to make Mike Barclay move his business after how hard he has worked and everything he has done for this community. Mike is one of our biggest employers and supports many families here. He provides jobs, pays his taxes—probably one of the largest taxpayers in Manti— and supports this community. Without Mike we wouldn’t have that big, beautiful football stadium that we all enjoy so much. It is because of his generosity, his employees and his equipment that it even exists. The Barclay Mechanical name has been listed year after year as a sponsor for almost every fundraiser in our area. He gladly contributes to our schools, churches, businesses and other activities. I can understand these property owners not wanting new businesses to move into THE EDITOR... Grab opportunity for aquatics center their neighborhood, but Mike has an existing business and you can see that he has spent a lot of money trying to conform with everyone’s wishes by fencing off his property and keeping it extremely clean. You can’t even see what is stored there. There are definitely other properties in that area that should be more of an issue than Barclay Mechanical! I know how hard it is mentally, physically and financially to start a business and keep it running. The stress and mental anguish that his family must be feeling at what they are being put through makes me angry. The cost of them having to move would be tremendous and totally unnecessary. I feel that we need to work together to protect and support our businesses and their investments and keep them in our town. Manti is in desperate need of new business and industry so we can all stay here, and so that our kids can live and work here if they choose to. Are we really going to drive out one our biggest employers? I see Mike being forced out because of a few selfish people. There are other communities that have made good offers to Barclay Mechanical and will welcome them with open arms. If Barclay ends up taking one of those offers and moving I say shame on you Manti. Shame on you for letting us lose one the few businesses we do have; shame on you for putting this good family through what you have and shame on you for not taking care of your own. If the people and city fathers of this town won’t support its businesses, why would any other business ever consider coming to Manti? What we have to offer doesn’t look so good does it? Lets get a grip people. Carol Hansen Manti Pool bond is bad debt On June 28 we will vote on another bond to put ourselves as a community further in debt. A bond is a debt. We have been counseled to get out of debt. I think this is just as true for communities as it is for individuals. On this point alone we should vote no for the bond issue. A5 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition If the water park was a good idea for a commercial enterprise, then let a business build it and run it. Since it apparently is not a project that would attract private capital we should think about why we are allowing a special interest group to take money out of all of our pockets. If a group of citizens wants to have a water park they should organize a club, sell memberships, and pay dues to accomplish their desires. Vote no on the bond issue. Neil and Joan Van Leeuwen Manti We encourage everyone to support the opportunity we have to build a new swimming facility in our community. We have the opportunity, if we take it now, to get an interest free loan. Look at this as an investment in our community and especially in our kids. It’s definitely worth a few dollars a month to provide them with a great place for some healthy outdoor recreation. W would also like to thank all of the members of the pool committee for their many hours of service in trying to make our community an even better place to live and raise our families.
