Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Reading night features guest readers By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer GUNNISON—Curious George and The Cat in the Hat, among other special guest readers, will take children and their families on “A Reading Road Trip” at Family Reading Night on Thursday Cantus (Continued from A1) t o Wi n t e r, ” “Snowflakes,” from 6-8 p.m. at Gunnison Valley Elementary. Children are welcome to wear their pajamas to the event. Not only will they get to attend four reading sessions and receive a free book, but also they will get to see one of their teachers kiss a turtle. During the last week, stu- dents have been depositing their spare change into buckets representing several teachers. The teacher receiving the most votes must kiss the turtle at the reading night activity. Funds raised from this project will go toward the purchase of new books. Along with the evening’s other activities, Principal Grant Hansen will introduce a new reading program to be used next year. Other readers at the event will include Steve Burr, TerriLee Hammond, and Miss Gunnison, Cari Garff. The Gunnison Valley Elementary PTA is hosting the event. and “Now the Winter.” These performed on Temple Square. The group sang two additional songs, “O’ Wind” and “Looking Glass River,” and then ended its program by singing “The National Anthem” a cappella style. Visitors to the capitol stopped to listen to the performance. On Jan. 14 Cantus sang the National Anthem prior to the Utah Jazz game at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City. The girls were ushered onto the game floor and surrounded by Jazz players, Milwaukee Bucks players, cameramen and security personnel as they began their performance. The Jazz Bear interacted with the choir members following their performance, telling them what a great job they had done. The girls and their parents then stayed to watch the ball game, which the Jazz won, 98-87. Cantus choir members include Kharissa Allred, Shaylee Bosshardt, Cassity Clayton, Halie Garff, Cari Garff, Kaylee Yeager, Carly Causey, Haylie Johnson, Bailey Thatcher, Jessica Ward, Breanna Young, Lyberty Peterson, Chelsea Gubeli, Tesssa Christensen, Stacie Mellor, Tilly Miller, Mady Peterson, Ashley Snyder, Nicole Childs, Ashley Wegener and Emily Wegener. Cantus will continue performing until the spring concert in May. The young women appreciate the support of the valley, and especially their parents for making it possible for them to attend these special performances. were the same songs they Jeremy Reid named to academic all-state team GUNNISON—Jeremy Reid, senior and captain of the Gunnison High School basketball team, has been named to the Utah High School Activities Association (USHAA) 2-A academic all-state team. Jeremy was honored during halftime at the 2A championship basketball game in Richfield. To be nominated, an athlete needed to maintain a 3.75 GPA throughout high school. Jeremy’s overall GPA is 3.975. Academic all-state team members received a keepsake award and souvenir program listing all 2A academic all-state team members. They were also highlighted in the Deseret News. Jeremy is the son of Darrel and Stacey Reid of Gunnison. GVE Reader Night On Thursday, March 13, the Gunnison Valley Elementary is planning their annual reader day. The students will participate in fun reading activities during the entire day at school. In coordination with this event, the Gunnison Valley Elementary PTA has scheduled Reader Night on the same date, March 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “Road Trip to Reading.” Students are welcome to attend in their pajamas but please remember that the school dress code still applies. The evening will begin with the Kiss the Turtle fundraiser. Students will be voting by putting coins in the jar of the teacher they want to pucker up for the turtle. The teacher with the most money at the end of the fund raiser will be the lucky one to kiss the turtle! The students will then be given a map and they can choose four separate reading sessions lasting 15 minutes each. There will be eight sessions to choose from including one to be read in Spanish. A reading snack will be provided for everyone to take home as well as each child in attendance will get to select a free book! There will also be a book fair that will be open and held in the school library and will run the entire evening.
