Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A8 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Gunnison martial artists compete in testing By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer GUNNISON—Seven students of the Royal West Martial Arts studio at Gunnison recently participated in martial arts testing held on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Head Master Royal West Martial Arts Studio at Provo. All students were examined and evaluated by the headmaster, who advised the students to “never forget the basic’s of martial arts, to better themselves, to have self confidence in ones abilities, and to have courtesy and respect for others around them.” Each student was quizzed about why they liked martial arts in addition to being tested on their skills. Those participating from Sanpete County included Rachel Bulldogs (Continued from A7) member can contribute. Pro: The team has good speed. Hill said the teams’ speed would convert into solid defense. To capitalize on that speed, the team will play more man-to-man and multi-defense schemes than in years’ past. Con: The team is “not super tall.” With the exception of 6-foot-4 senior Stuart Watson and sophomore Brendan Davis, also 6-foot-4, the team lacks size. Hill said one of the main goals for the team is to focus on rebounding. If the team can rebound well, they may be able to overcome their vertical challenge. “I hope we’re able to rebound with these teams,” said Hill. Hill said that losses to graduation were not severe. The team lost post man J. D. Pay and shooters Wayne Young and Levi Christenson. Pay’s size was always a benefit under the basket, but Hill said that he lacked in other aspects of the game. As for Young and Christenson, both could shoot the ball well, but Hill said, “We never got all of them on the same page at the same time.” Which is another big goal for the Bulldogs. Hill says lineup changes in the first few games will revolve around chemistry and match-ups that work well together. Off the bench, Hill says to look to Taylor Stewart and Avery to make contributions. Both shoot the ball well, said Hill. The Bulldogs will play their first games of the season in a preregion tournament at the Sevier Valley Event Center this weekend. Hill said he expects tough competition, as most of the teams have already been practicing and playing. The Bulldogs will face Rowland Hall on Friday at 5 p.m. and then Waterford on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Hawks (Continued from A7) Sanpete. The four seniors leading the team are Kyler Wheeler, Blaine Larsen, Colton Blackham and Kyle Christiansen. Depth comes from seven juniors who will see plenty of playing time: Austen Jorgensen, Tyler Johansen, Matt Jacobson and Skyler Zabriskie along with Colton Dyches, Colton Jorgensen and Doran Williams. “Later in the year we may have someone become our money guy, but right now all 12 or 13 guys have to contribute for us to win,” Farr said. Farr will again be assisted on the bench by his father Bill, longtime coach at Wasatch High School. Also in the brain trust are Trent Jorgensen and Russell Keisel. Region 8 will have a new look this year without Lehi and the arrival of Granite and Juan Diego. En route to an 11-10 record, North Sanpete beat both teams last year in the preseason, 66-52 over Granite and 60-55 over Juan Diego. Last year Emery took the Region 8 crown with a record of 7-1 but were only 10-11 overall. Not losing much to graduation, the Spartans are a threat to repeat as league champs. Davey Justice and Darrin Winn, who both averaged double figures, are returning. Juan Diego was the 2A state champion last year, and although they lost 2A MVP Marquis Wilson to graduation, the team has All-State guards Mike Larsen and Mason Miller back. Granite was knocked out in the first round of last year’s tournament by eventual champion Tooele, 55-50. Daniel Young and Josh Heap should be able to put plenty of points on the board for the Farmers, who were 12-9 last season. Delta lost all five starters from last year, but Carbon is expecting its best team in several years. Carbon returns guards Chase Julian (who averaged 10 points a game as a junior) and Schyler Nammany who sunk the Hawks with five three-pointers in their first meeting last year. The Dinos opened their season last week with a 57-46 win over Uintah with four players, including Julian and Nammany, scoring in double figures. After opening the season hosting Park City tonight, the Hawks will host Wasatch on Friday. Wasatch won back-toback 3A titles in 2003 and 2004,] but was kept from a third crown by a 38-36 upset by Tooele in the championship game last February. After a couple weeks on the road, North Sanpete will welcome Gunnison on Dec. 16. Opoulos, Stephanie Spencer Megan Jensen, Kenneth Stafford, Shannon LaCrue, Ryleigh Jensen, and Alexandra Stafford. All of these students train out of the Gunnison Royal West Martial Arts Studio. The next testing skills competitions will be held in February and March of 2006. In an effort to raise money for this competition students of Royal West Martial Arts will sell 3-pound PUBLIC HEARING (Continued from A1) When Chavez was asked who was in charge, he said that many people worked on it, but maybe he, Julio Herrara, Rogelio Chavez, and Juan Carlos Adame might be in charge of things “a little.” But, he said, many people had worked hard on the project. Saturday, Nov. 26 a dinner and dance were held at the Blackhawk Arena to raise more money for the project. They had pozole, tostadas, tacos, tamales, frituras and drinks. The food was donated and they raised needed money to continue the renovation. Bishop George H. Neiderauer will conduct the dedication ceremonies for the new chuch.
