Gunnison Library plans grand re-opening with reading program By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer GUNNISON—A grand reopening of the Gunnison Civic Library has been planned for Tuesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. in conjunction with the launching of the library’s summer reading program. The library is reopening after a renovation that included new carpet and paint. As part of the summer read- ing program, under the direction of temporary librarian Mindy Anderson and activity leader Gaylynn Judd, Story Time will be held each Tuesday from 11 a.m.noon through July 19, culminating with an activity the last day. The theme of this year’s program is Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds. The reading program is free and open to young people, preschool age through age 14. The program involves story hour, a reading club, fun EPHRAIM—Sanpete Academy, the alternative high school for both North and South Sanpete districts, awarded 18 students with certificates of completion on Tuesday, May 24. The students will take their certificates of completion to their assigned high school and graduate with their class. Families and friends showed up for the ceremony in large numbers, and extra seats were in high demand. Principal Craig Rasmussen began his opening remarks by saying, “These are all students that had been given up on at other schools. They were told they wouldn’t be able to make it here tonight, but here they are.” Sanpete Academy is a competency based education sys- activities, prize drawings, and more. Families are being invited to join the Read Aloud portion of the program. Registration for the reading program begins Wednesday, June 1. Call library at 528-3104 for additional information. Refreshments will be served at the end of Story Time and again during the library board’s meeting from 5:30-6:30 p.m. that afternoon. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. tem, which means students are not required to spend a set amount of time in class. Students are given competency tests to earn credit. Most students come to Sanpete Academy because they are credit deficient, and while at the academy students are given the chance to earn twice as many credits. “At Sanpete Academy we are all school,” Rasmussen says. “We don’t have sports, extracurricular activities, or assemblies.” The lack of distractions and the innovative education style is what helps fast track students, allowing them to catch up with their class. Teachers are what really make the difference to the students. As students received their certificates many of them hugged their teachers, and with eyes brimming with tears thanked them. “Our teachers really work hard to help students to believe in themselves,” Rasmussen says. Many teachers teach four or five subjects at a time to help accommodate the needs of the students. Rasmussen says, “The faculty can’t be a one trick pony at this school.” The teachers at Sanpete Academy find ways to get through the walls that some students put up. One teacher told a group of students if they graduated she would die her hair blue, which she did. When the teachers were called to the front to be recognized many parents stood and clapped. And after the ceremony students stood with a favorite teacher and had parents take a snapshot.
