Show Wednesday, December 20, 2006 A9 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Pillar (Continued from A1) sustained the family but also brought them closer together. He has become a leading sheepman in the region. He is a member of the Utah Woolgrowers and has served on the state board of directors for 14 years. He is also a member of the Gunnison Irrigation Board. Madsen enjoys working hard. He repairs his own machinery, fences and gates. Even as he traverses the public lands, Madsen will leave things better than he found them by removing rocks that have rolled into the road or filling in potholes. For the past 40 years, he has helped the Jaycee’s and the Lions Clubs with the 4th of July celebrations. He has also cooked mutton and scone dinners for the Lion’s for the past 35 years. His church service has allowed him to be very involved with the youth as a stake activity director and ward Explorer leader. He has also sung with the ward choir. Madsen also values playtime with his family. For the past 25 years he has captained the houseboat for family outings to Lake Powell. Madsen feels that even though life isn’t fair, the trials we are given are meant to strengthen us and helps to reveal what God’s plan is for us individually. Madsen is a wonderful example of service. Kyson McBride, Heidi Sorensen, Breanna Fredrickson, Stephanie Spencer, and Bailey Thatcher read his tribute and presented his candle. Caden Burrell then presented a candle to Rae Lou Olsen. Olsen is a very talented woman who enjoys life and offers her time and talents to those around her. She is an excellent example of compassionate service. She A Christmas Wish for all of you from Peggy and Deb in the store and Joel, Jimmy and L.R. in the field KEN HANSEN / MESSENGER PHOTO Gunnison Valley Middle School orchestra students perform for annual Pillar Awards. especially enjoys reaching out to the single women of Mayfield. She always makes sure to remember them on their birthdays and holidays and makes sure they have transportation to activities. She also pays close attention to those who cannot leave their homes. She checks on them daily and transports them to funerals, weddings, and other occasions. Her church service involves working in the Relief Society, as an ordinance worker, organist but perhaps her most devoted service has been to family history. One of her most outstanding accomplishments has been with family history. She has researched, compiled and printed five generations of the Whitlock and Christiansen families. She has shared her work with many of her family members and the town of Mayfield. She has also compiled official histories for the town of Mayfield and the Mayfield LDS Ward. In fact the Mayfield Ward meetinghouse has photographs of all the bishops past and present because of her diligent work. Olsen has been devoted to the Lions Club for many years. She can be found doing highway clean-up, planting and caring for trees in the park or selling tickets for the 24th of July celebrations. Olsen is willing to serve in any capacity. As a mother, grandma, aunt, sister, niece, teacher and especially a friend, Rae Lou Olsen loves and serves everyone with whom she comes in contact.
