Johansen led all scorers in the game with 17 points. GUNNISON—After starting the season with five road games, the Gunnison Bulldogs basketball team hosted its first game last Friday against the North Sanpete Hawks. And while the Hawks were not good guests—handing the Bulldogs their worst loss of the season, 78-48—they played some good ball. North Sanpete stormed to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a 15-0 run fueled by six Gunnison turnovers. The run was highlighted by a pair of threes from Hawk Tyler Johansen and five offensive rebounds by Russell Christensen. A bucket by Kevin Nay and a 3-pointer from Taylor Newman closed in the score to 19-7 as the first quarter ended. Rebounding in the first quarter was also heavily in the Hawk’s favor. North Sanpete grabbed 14 boards to Gunnison’s four. “We started off with some good defense and that set up our offense,” said North Sanpete head coach Bull Keisel North Sanpete guard Matt Jacobson and Christensen each scored six points in the second quarter as the Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 25-8 to take a 44- Hop and Shop drawing Friday By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer GUNNISON — Excitement is growing as the final days are counting down for the drawing of a TV and a digital camera in the first annual Hop and Shop contest being sponsored by the Gunnison Businessesmen’s Association. The Hawks limited Gunnison to 4-of-24 shooting in the first half while shooting 16-of-34 themselves. North Sanpete stretched its lead to 68-27 in the third quarter, paced by a pair of threes from Kolton Jorgensen. Gunnison freshman Erick Rosenvall poured in 12 points in the final period to help the Bulldogs narrow the score. Rosenvall ended up as the leading scorer for Gunnison with 13 points. Nay, who came into the game averaging 18.2 points per game after pouring in 29 at Juab two nights before, was held to nine before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. North Sanpete finished with 44 percent shooting from the field to only 26 percent for Gunnison. Johansen led all scorers with 17 points. Jacobson added 13 points for North Sanpete while Christensen scored 12 and pulled down nine rebounds. Justin Curtis came off the bench to lead North Sanpete with seven assists. Sam Judd led Gunnison in rebounding with seven. Last Wednesday, Gunnison fought to a close loss against Juab, 57-49. Nay led the Bulldogs with 29 points but had little help in scoring from his teammates. The next closest Bulldog, Rosenvall, had five points in the game. However, Gunnison was able to keep it close throughout the game, which displayed the consistency the Bulldogs have lacked to this point. Most of their losses were the result of one or two poor quarters. Gunnison has one game this week on Thursday when the team hosts Millard. On Tuesday, the Hawks lost on the road to the Uintah Utes, 75-53. The Utes hit 12 of their 15 shots from two-point range in the first half to cruise to a 3421 halftime lead. North Sanpete was whistled for 25 fouls in the game, sending the Utes to the free-throw line 32 times, where they were successful on 23 shots. Drew Pierce of Uintah led all scorers with 19, and teammate Brandon Beech added 15 points. Russell Christensen paced North Sanpete with 14 points while Matt Jacobson added 11 and Shaun Seely scored 10. The Hawks are 3-5 on the season as they head south this week for another pair of road games. After eight games North Sanpete has three players averaging in double figures, led by Christensen who is scoring at a clip of 13.0 points per game. Johansen averages 11.5, and Jacobson is at 10.3 points per game. Christensen also leads the squad with 8.9 rebounds per game. This week North Sanpete plays at Beaver on Thursday and then travels to Cedar City to play the Cedar Redmen on Friday. Beaver has a record of 5-3, and Cedar is 3-3 on the season. Lady Bulldogs on a roll Despite good record, Gunnison girls still bottom of Region 12 GUNNISON—Led by a of couple savvy, tough players, the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team is on a roll with six wins in a row. Sophomore Bailie Reynolds and junior Teigan Jensen combine for an average of 27 points per game, to be one of the most lethal scoring tandems in all of 2A basketball. Reynolds has drained eight 3-pointers in six games, the fourth best 3-point shooter in the state. The team suffered two losses to begin the season against Piute, 54-51 on Nov. 21 and North Summit 46-34 on Nov. 28, but have been unstoppable as they recorded four victories since. The loss to Piute was a near miss for the team. The Lady Bulldogs won every quarter but the third, where Piute outscored Gunnison by six points. In the game three Gunnison players recorded points in double figures. Jensen had 14 points, Reynolds recorded 13 and Koral Campbell had 12. Against North Summit, Gunnison was leading after the third quarter, 29-26, but the Lady Braves outscored the Lady Bulldogs 20-5 in the fourth to claim the victory. On Nov. 30, Reynolds and Jensen combined for 33 points as they defeated Kanab 51-41. But it was defense that made the difference as the Lady Bulldogs held their opponents to two points in the first quarter, 14-2. It was a deficit from which the lady Cowboys would not recover. Offense and defense combined to wallop Parowan on Dec. 5, 46-29. The Lady Bulldogs annihilated the Lady Rams, 35-14 through the first three quarters. Two days later, Gunnison won every quarter to defeat the Juab Lady Wasps 39-26. Jensen had 17 points and Reynolds recorded 13. The Lady Bulldogs showed they have what it takes to fight through adversity and come out victorious in their 53-47 win over American Leadership Academy on Dec. 12. Gunnison had a narrow, 3128 lead at the half, but lost it in the third quarter. The team ral- Teigan Jensen puts up a shot against two Manti High School defenders in a game last year. Jensen and Reynolds are backed up regularly by the solid play of Campbell and seniors, Lisa Bartholomew and Samantha Coulter. Despite the girls’ dominance to this point, they have their work cut out for them. Region 12 looks to be the toughest region in 2A basketball, with Richfield and Manti both being undefeated and San Juan and South Sevier each with only one loss. Even with their 4-2 record, the Lady Bulldogs are in fifth place in Region 12. The best records in regions 13 and 14 are held by Millard (4-2) and North Summit (5-2). The girls came away with two wins from a tournament in Richfield last weekend, the first over Millard on Friday, 47-42, the second over South Summit, 37-26.
