One participant begins to ride his bike in the same direction. Other students had passed under the bridge and emerged on the other side of the highway, where they were beginning to walk across the bridge to the south side of the river walk and then down the west side of the path. Residents venture onto new RiverWalk By Karen Prisbrey Staff writer GUNNISON—Gunnison Valley residents expressed a range of sentiments as they gathered for the ribbon cutting and first official walk on the Sanpitch River Walk last week. Janelle Overly wanted to try the walk pushing her baby, Zack. Her son, Spencer, wanted to ride his new bike. Students and teachers from Gunnison Valley Elementary listened to sounds of cars, small trucks and diesels overhead as they passed under U.S. 89 bridge. One child said the river walk “growls like the Troll in the Billy Goats Gruff.” Some adults were anxious to ride their bikes the full length of the walk. Others simply wanted to test out the new surface. From the 200 East entrance they strolled leisurely toward the highway bridge through stands of now barren tamarack and cottonwoods. A small stream of water rippled in the river bed where and rabbits, pheasants and other varmint scurried amid the rocks, sagebrush and tea vine. On the west side of the bridge an elderly lady was to say that the river walk would be a short cut to her house from the grocery store.” Beth Wilson said, “We deserve to be able to walk and enjoy nature while getting a good workout.” KAREN PRISBREY / MESSENGER PHOTO SEAN HALES / MESSENGER PHOTO Curtis Anderson, member of the river walk committee, tells children that they can now cross the highway in safety by using the river walk as they come and go from school. Janelle Overly and her sons Spencer (on the bike) and Zack (in the stroller) were the first patrons of the Sanpitch River Walkway after a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Friday. The elementary school Christmas program Tuesday evening was delightful as always. Students sang with enthusiasm and filled the new high school gym with Christmas spirit. It was nice to hear spiritual Christian songs along with the fun, light-hearted songs. The annual Christmas Yule program at the middle school was especially nice with Jack Madsen and Rae Lou Olsen being recognized for the contributions they have made to the community. Congratulations to both of these deserving recipients. The ribbon cutting and dedication of the Sanpitch River Walk on Friday were exciting events for children and adults of the community. With all the traffic on the highway, the walk under the bridge from one side of the highway to the other will be a lot safer for children. Home in time to witness the ribbon cutting and dedication of the river walk was Michael Nay, son of Lori and Richard Nay. Michael, his wife Shilo, and daughter Alexia are here visiting for the holidays. Shilo’s parents are Mike and Sherry Crandall of Springville. The Nays live in Maryland, where Michael is attending medical school. Congratulations to Cheyenne Thatcher who is the winner of this year’s library Christmas tree raffle. The drawing was done at the river walk dedication. Johnny and Jody Goble were blessed with the birth of their second grandchild, a little girl to Craig and Jessica Boren of Payson.
