Ephraim, Utah 84627 283-8182 www.edwardjones.com New studio for sculpture, metal work, wood work is big step forward By Emily Green and Suzanne Dean Staff writers EPHRAIM—The Snow College Visual Art Department is beginning an effort to become the college’s third nationally accredited fine arts department. For some years, the Music Department, now known as the Horne School of Music, has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, a feather in the cap of a two-year institution. Last year, the Theater Department won accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Theater. Now visual arts has launched a “self study,” one of the first steps toward becoming accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The department hopes to be ready to make formal application within two years, says Adam Larsen, department chair. Collectively, the three departments make up the Division of Fine Arts at the college. “Our goal as a division is to get all three of our programs accredited,” says Larsen. Beyond that, the division aspires to develop programs where, in partnership with Utah universities, it can offer upperdivision work. Students could remain at Snow past their associate degrees and then transfer to a university for their final two to three semesters. In the past five years, the Visual Art Department has experienced dramatic growth. The numbers of faculty, students and courses taught have nearly tripled, says Larsen. Last year, the department graduated 59 BRUCE VAN DER RIET / MESSENGER PHOTO Faculty and students in new sculpture studio at Snow. The department now has three full time faculty members, and seven or eight adjunct professors. Brad Taggert, a faculty member, says students are becoming better prepared for transfer to four-year universities because they have more opportunities than in the past to work closely with full-time faculty. Additionally, incoming freshmen as well as sophomores may attend seminars where they are taught how to put together portfolios to apply for university art programs. Department facilities in- Financial Tips from Edward Jones If you’re planning to retire soon, you have much to anticipate: more time with your family, the chance to travel, and so on. Yet, there’s one thing to avoid during your retirement years: investment scams. Unfortunately, retirees are the chief target for investment con artists. To protect yourself from being victimized, ask for the credentials, background and references of anyone trying to sell you investments. Furthermore, never say yes to “you must act now” offers. Any offer that sounds too good to be true is too good to be true. Legitimate investment opportunities will still be around tomorrow and next week. Finally, always stay in charge of your money. Never work with anyone who is eager to take “total control” of your money. True investment professionals will make recommendations based on your needs, communicate with you regularly and involve you throughout the investment process. There is also a dark room and various other studios. The new sculpture studio, added to the east side of the Humanities Building over the summer, is a big step toward accreditation, says Larsen. The facility is used in all three-dimensional art classes. While the studio is a single, large space, it includes areas for figure sculpture, metal work and woodwork. If a student is working on a very large sculpture, he or she can move to a patio just outside the studio door. The former sculpture studio “was so crowded that it was dangerous for students,” Larsen says. The new sculpture studio is nearly three times the size of the old one. The department is also collaborating with the Central Utah Art Center to get more public art displayed on campus and throughout Ephraim. “If you go to a campus the size of Snow in the East, you will probably find 20 to 30 sculptures and pieces of art on display. Snow only has six or seven,” says Taggart. The art center plans to sponsor sculpture competitions. Winning pieces would be installed on campus or in parks and other public spaces in Ephraim. Larsen says Ephraim City has agreed to contribute financially to the effort. ‘92 Chevy Suburban 4x4 Fully loaded, third seat in mint condition ‘98 Chevy Lumina Over 20 Buy Here, Pay Here vehicles to choose from! ‘96 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4 Excellent gas mileage Leather interior, nice! 4-door, auto, great fuel economy R&J Motors • 290 N.
