GEORGE—Austin Pickett of Gunnison won the State Football Punt, Kick and Pass Tournament held in St. George on Oct. 15. Austin, the son of Jeremy and Angie Pickett, was one of six youths from across the state participating in the event. To qualify for the tournament, Austin entered Richfield’s town competition and won against 30 other participants. Austin was also one the top five scorers in the Intermountain West Tournament, who all were awarded a trip to a San Francisco 49ers football game in San Francisco the latter part of November. The Sanpete Messenger The Voice of Sanpete County since 1893 GUNNISON—Gunnison Valley Hospital, in conjunction with its Home Health and Hospice department, sponsored a health fair Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Gunnison Valley High School girls’ gym. Hospital personnel and volunteers from throughout the valley gave health related information to more than 300 people of all ages who took advantage of the services. Laboratory tests were taken from Oct. 26-28 at the hospital, and results of those tests were given to the patients at the health fair. These services were offered at a reduced fee, and included a complete metabolic profile, blood count, lipid profile, prostate specific antigen, thyroidstimulating hormone, and hemoglobin A, 1, C. Blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, oxygen saturation, eye test, and dental checkups were given free. Three licensed massage therapists from the valley also volunteered their services. The county health nurse gave flu shots for a nominal fee, and food handlers’ class was held. Other services provided were Medicare help and information regarding home care and hospice, physical therapy, mental health, arthritis, and information on 72-hour kits. The hospital pharmacist was also available to evaluate medications. Testing involves not only demonstrating how well new moves and routines are learned, but also showing that the student is trying to better himself as a person. Students were asked “Who am I as a martial artist?” One student answered, “I am a person who wants to know how to defend myself properly and to use these skills only for self defense, not to intentionally hurt others.” Advancements were given to Jessica Bastian, Axtell, brown stripe (third kup); Heidi Bastian, Axtell, blue belt (fourth kup); Drew Holdaway, Centerfield, blue belt (fourth kup); Kathy Schlosser, Mayfield, green belt (sixth kup); Rachel Johnson, Gunnison, yellow belt (eighth kup) and Chris Crane, Salina, yellow belt (eighth kup). Head instructor for this event was Master Dan, a black belt in Kyukido from the Mt. Pleasant studio. Local instructors included Valerie Opulous, second degree black belt and Brent Opulous, first degree black belt, both of Sterling; Stacy Stafford, first degree black belt of Gunnison and Jared Williams, first degree black belt of Ephraim. Darlene Agren with her girls and boys choirs sang several numbers and the middle school cheer team showed off some routines. The cheer team also sold Subway cinnamon buns and drinks as a fundraiser. Susan Anderson of Gunnison Home Health and Hospice stated, “The health fair was a tremendous success. We appreciate the health professionals and volunteers who helped make the event possible. Because of their efforts we were able to get a lot of valuable information out into the hands of people in our community.
