MANTI — The Manti City Council has approved a percent sales tax increase for consideration by the public During a Sept 27 meeting the council elected to put the tax hike up for city vote in November although that vote will not be part of the general election on Nov 2 but will be held later in the month Mayor Kim Anderson says that the city considered three different taxes but decided on the sales tax increase over the others which cluded a phone tax — part of an optional communications tax administered by the state — and a property tax increase The council decided against a property tax hike since residents will possibly see one next year anyway to fund a new city swimming pool Anderson says a tax increase is necessary since city income has been flat for the last couple of years forcing the city to dip into financial reserves According to state law income from added sales tax must be earmarked for transportation but Anderson says it could free up other funds in the general budget for city employee salaries or other budget items “Money is always needed for upkeep and expansion of roads” Choir seeks voices MT PLEASANT — The Sanpete Valley Singers have begun preparation for their his wife Jean and then shot himself outside their modest home last Wednesday Oct 13 The overriding impression that has emerged since die incident is how little people knew about the coufife1 who hid’ blinds' covering all their windows ahd ivoided contact with neighbors Most of the speculation centers on the possibility that Jean Smaw 80 was in ill health and William Smaw 85 wanted to end her suffering The wife “might have had some kind of illness” says Salina police chief Greg Harwood Prescriptions were found in the house and one of the couple's two daughters mentioned a possible illness The scuttlebutt in town says Joe Turner a local mortician who knew William Smaw slightly is that the wife had just learned she had a terminal illness that she had already been “having trouble healthwise and (that) he didn’t want to see her suffer anymore” Six days earlier in what seems to be a similar incident Kimball Jencks 84 shot his wife Beata Jencks 8 in her room at Cottonwood Hospital — and then shot himself Based on a noted written by Beata Jencks Murray police have described the as a mercy killing Like the Smaws the Jencks were described as tensely private people Investigators have no way of knowing whether news reports about the Murray incident figured in the Salina deaths “Anytime off! Mortuary “That's why I hate to see suicide of any kind” The Smaws moved from Texas to Salina six or eight years ago but no one knows why they picked Salina According to Turner who completed the death certificate William Smaw had worked as a photoengraver a ' printirtgtradc ' Just after noon Wednesday ALL Oct 17 The Gunnison Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Saints will host a fireside at 7 pm at the state center The speaker is Alex Boye a singer from Great Britain and convert to the LDS Church Monday Oct 18 Snow faculty to give recital Vedrana Suhotic and David Porter music faculty at Snow College affiliated with the Utah Symphony will perform piano and’violin music of Schubert Brahms and Ives at 7:30 pm in the Snow College Eccles Center Oct 23 Weekend The fifth annual “Holiday Magic Boutique” craft show will be held for widows” at the Fairview Dance Hall bed ayi on J Saturday ginning ttt10 am on Th iwl1 av Sevier County dispatchers received a 91 call saying a woman had been shot Harwood and two other officers were there within minutes They saw Jean Smaw lying on the ground inside the fence near where her husband was standing Subsequent investigation showed she had been shot twice in the head “We confronted him asked him ‘What’s going on?”’ says Harwood “We could see he had a gun He looked at us looked back down put the gun to his head and shot” He fell on top of his wife’s body Officers searched the house and found “nothing that would help us figure out” the case Harwood said He said there was no history of domestic violence that local officers were aware of But police had responded to complaints from William Smaw that neighborhood kids were harassing him Benjamin Miller who has lived next door for five years said William Smaw mostly initiated a conversation when he wanted to complain about something such as weeds in Miller’s yard But once he voluntarily filled a hole in the yard “He must have been a good guy under- neath” we see something r Sunday Musical fireside held in Gunnison says Miller Arrested: Bernard Carroll Address: Manti Date of Arrest: 10804 Location of Arrest: Manti Charges: Booked and released for court on charge of attempted possession of Arrested: Jamie Mower Address: Manti Date of Arrest: 10604 Location of Arrest: Indianola Charges: Sevier County Justice Arrested: Mark Leon Roberts Address: Gunnison Date of Arrest: 10704 Location of Arrest: Gunnison Charges: Assault and assault in the presence Court Warrant Bail: $500 Arrested: Corrina Dee Rigby Address: Mt Pleasant Date of Arrest: 92904 Arrested in: Mt Pleasant Charges: Intoxication of a child Bail: $1544 Arrested: David J Bills Address: Gunnison Date of Arrest: 10604 Location of Arrest: Manti disorderly conduct Bail: $494 '"Scuiuftic Deer Thurs Hunt Weekend Oct 21 22 Oct 23 Fairview 7 pm 7 pm 6 pm 10 am 10 am 10 am FriOct INSTANT UNLIMITED MONTH Booked and releasee for court on three counts a vehicle of burglary burglary and three counts theft Charges: stolen property Sat Purchases With this coupon HAPPENINGS on exhibit School Officers responded to this house on 1 00 S 1 00 E in Salina one week ago today in response to a murdersuicide call Canyon sees new growth already iftf'il aieiaai Dance Hall checkout FREE gift to first 50 customers door pnzes $50 drawing tickets with purchase Central $3999 A — rr Get the Flu Shot Not The Flu Medicare Part B pays for flu shots INSTANT CONNECT 500 PLAN Push Tel’ minutes 500 anytime minutes Unlimited nights weekends Best Time: September November Not Too Late: December January February For Information Call or visit — $3999 ££ E2 w ttt County since 1893 Richfield Main tMI tow" or kMltoei n‘ nM r in 0'rtl nm it IflH! iit nH r n tfT'r wm imii'mi unu rv with disabilities needing special accommoda- tions during this proceeding should contact Kristine Frischknecht (435 ) 835-- 3 at least 3 work days in advance r ft ft Public notice is hereby given that on October 28 2004 at 4:00 pm in the office of the County Clerk of Sanpete County at the Sanpete Courthouse in Manti Utah there will be conducted a test of the automatic tubulating equipment to be used to tabulate the result of the General Election to be held November 2 2004 Individuals awtoiw The Sanpete Messenger of Sanpete utttli VlDEOTROKIX 96 North The Voire 1530 NEXTEL VS Tell a friend!
