Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Sanpete County NEWS•BRIEFS COUNTYWIDE INTEREST Messenger wins national award COLUMBIA, Mo.—The Sanpete Messenger took second place in the nation for “best editorial page” in a competition sponsored by the National Newspaper Association (NNA). The award recognizes a page that included an editorial by publisher Suzanne Dean about the lot-size issue in Spring City. The same editorial took first place in the non-daily category in a recent Utah Society of Professional Journalists competition. The Messenger competed with weekly newspapers throughout the nation with circulations of 3,000 or less. The award will be presented Sept. 30 at the NNA convention in Milwaukee. Sanpete Democrats get new look By Suzanne Dean MANTI—The Sanpete County Democratic Party has set up a post office box, adopted a logo, and soon hopes to have a web site. Sanpete County Democratic Chairman John Hales announced that the party is “now open for business” at P.O. Box 278, Manti, UT 84642. Hales said he hopes people will break in the mailbox by mailing in donations. Regarding the logo, Hales said, “I wanted to have something visual that establishes the party, that says we’re serious, something people will come to recognize.” Hales says that in the current era, it’s important to be accessible by having a presence on the Internet. He plans to make the Democratic Party the first of Sanpete’s political parties to have a website. Hales reminded all Sanpete residents that Aug. 15 is the deadline for filing for municipal offices. Party caucuses will be held in Ephraim and Mayfield, the two cities that have partisan elections. Caucus dates, times and places will be announced in the Sanpete Messenger. “Even though most local elections will be non-partisan, I feel I have a duty as a political leader to encourage participation in the democratic process,” Hales said. He invited people interested in running for mayor or city council positions to contact their city recorders for information—or to call him at 851-1992. He can also be reached by email at jdh0071@yahoo.com. PLEASANT—The Sanpete Valley Hospital Foundation will stage its second Skyline 10K@10K race again this year—with a few changes from last year’s race. The race is scheduled Saturday, Aug. 6 at 8 a.m. It begins on State Road 31 (Fairview Canyon) between mile posts 11 and 12. Last year, 64 participants ran for 6.2 miles along Skyline Drive. But race organizers decided running the race along the dirt road was too risky. A thunderstorm would bog down runners and probably force the race to be called off. So this year’s race will be run on pavement. The starting point is just below the Fairview Canyon summit at about 9,300 feet. It proceeds uphill to a shade below the 10,000-foot level. Then runners follow a gentle downgrade, ending near Huntington Dam. Another change is addition of a 5K walk. Walkers start at the summit and walk downhill to the dam. The route for both events is “through pines and quaking aspens” in fresh mountain air, says race organizer Mark Beck of the hospital foundation board. Runners will compete in age categories. The categories for both men and women are under 16, 16-25, 26-39, 4059 and 60 and over. Organizers also hope to attract more participants than last year from both Sanpete County and around the state. Eventually, they’d like to build the race into a major Utah running event. This year’s race has been publicized in runner’s publications and on websites statewide. Registration for the race is $20 through July 31 and $25 after that. The walk registration is $15. All registration fees include a Skyline 10K@10K T-shirt. Besides possibly winning the race, or winning in an age and gender category, participants have a chance to win more than 100 door prizes gathered from local merchants, said Beck. Moreover, the family, business or other organization entering the most participants will be recognized on a plaque in the hospital foyer. Registration forms are available on line at w w w. S k y l i n e 1 0 K . c o m , Sanpete Valley Hospital, Far West Bank, Beck’s Home Furnishings, the Sanpete Messenger office in Manti and many other local businesses. Mormon Handcart Pageant scheduled (Continued from A1) tion from the library board. Childs will start the position in August, after a couple weeks of training, says library board president Kathy Pickett. Childs replaces Sue Gillam, who was fired in early May at the recommendation of the library board. Gillam says she doesn’t know why. And no one from the library board is talking about it. Gillam was fired shortly before the library reopened following a renovation last spring and shortly after she underwent hipreplacement surgery. She says no notice or reason was given for her dismissal. “They [members of the library board] never said anything about not working [during her surgery and recuperation.] They came in and said, ‘Give us your keys’ … I didn’t have two weeks’ notice, or even a day. When I asked them why, they said they didn’t have to tell me.” While she doesn’t know for Sanpete County sure, she has her own conjectures. “Maybe I got too independent for some of the people,” she says. “I got real comfortable in the job. When I get that way, I speak my mind, and maybe they didn’t like that.” Library board members are sticking to the position that no reason need be given. They cite a clause in Gillam’s contract that allowed for a one-year probationary period, during which her employment could be terminated without cause. Board member Marian Christensen said, “The town doesn’t need to know. … It’s between the library board and the librarian.” “I don’t know the reasons,” Mayor Scott Hermansen said. Explaining that the council usually follows the recommendations of city advisory boards, he continued, “The board came to me and said they wanted to let her go, and that’s what we did.” The Mormon Handcart Pageant will be July 27-30 at the County Fairgrounds in Nephi. Pre-pageant activities begin at 6:30 p.m.; the pageant begins at 9:15. For more information call (435) 623-0196.
