Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A8 Sanpete Messenger - Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Wednesday, July 13, 2005 Ashley (Continued from A1) didn’t even have time to stop.” Kayla ended up with cuts and bruises, but 11-year-old Ashley wasn’t so fortunate. When Brad and his brother-in-law Terry found Ashley, she had a larger boulder resting on her lower body and her head was wedged between two other rocks. “I guess I just picked up the rock and Terry helped me with Ashley,” said Brad. “We had a lot of other people who also were coming down the canyon and they helped too. Then we got the ambulances and got the girls to the hospital. Once Ashley was at the hospital and we saw how bad she was, they life-flighted her to [Primary] Children’s Hospital.” Ashley remains in critical condition with numerous injuries including two skull fractures, a broken nose, cheek and pelvis, and possible brain damage. Doc- tors have kept Ashley in a medical coma so she will be still, so as not to aggravate the injuries. Sandra is astonished at the outpouring of love, prayers and help from the community. “We’ve lived here about 10 years now and honestly, I’ve never been in a place that is so kind and generous. We’ve had people who don’t even know us or Ashley offer to help. Mandi’s father, Jack Russell of Gunnison, said, “We’ve had people come to the door with roasts and pizza and who’ve called and offered to do whatever they can. We needed hay for Ashley’s horses and couldn’t use the large bales so David Madsen brought us some small bales…we just can’t thank people enough. I even have a stack of coats and jackets that people who helped during the accident used to cover up Ashley when she was going into shock. I don’t know whose they are.” The support from the community hasn’t stopped at pizza, jackets and hay. The Mayfield Lions Club has donated toward the set-up costs of a fundraiser to help Ashley and the Dye family. The benefit, coordinated by Marsha Chappelle, is to be held at the Mayfield Park on Saturday, July 16 from 4:30 – 9 p.m. Chappelle also set up a trust fund at Gunnison Valley Bank for the family. “It’s really been amazing how people have donated time and money so Ashley will have a house to come home to and her animals are taken care of,” said Chappelle. “We’re trying to raise enough money to keep the family going until they can get back on their feet. And this fundraiser and the donations will help them. “We want the fundraiser to be a celebration of Ashley. We’re doing things that she loves. For instance, she loves music and singing and we’re having singers come. She loves animals and we’ll have “donation dogs” walking around so people can donate to them. We’re even having cowboy poetry and are trying to get some clowns who can come and entertain.” Chappelle said. In addition to the fundraiser, a website has been set up to give updates on the status of Ashley and also to accept donations through PayPal. The site is http:/ /www.AshleyHelp.com Ashley’s grandmother, Sandra Russell of Gunnison, is pleased by the fundraising efforts. “This is a celebration of Ashley and her spirit,” she says. “She’s such a beautiful, happy child who loves music and animals. We hope that everyone comes out to the Park and celebrates with us—and that this will City seeks volunteers for Old Rock Church cleanup By C. R. Truitt Staff writer CENTERFIELD—The Centerfield City Council announced at the City Council meeting July 7 that volunteers are needed to clean up the Old Rock Church. The council set July 14, 19, 20, 27 and 28 from 5-9 p.m. as cleanup days. During the council meeting local contractor Scott Christensen took mayor protemp Leslie Gregerson, the council and others at the meeting on a field trip next door to the Old Rock Church to explain the next steps in the restoration project. Christensen said the first thing to be done was screen out the pigeons. The pigeons had been run out while the city replaced the roof, but they have moved back in. After the pigeons are out, he said, various cleanup tasks need to be done, including picking up fallen down ceiling, collecting trash and old boards, and cleaning pigeon droppings off the brick. The council encourages volunteers to bring rakes, shovels, hammers or other tools with them for the cleanup. For more information contact Debbie Hansen at the city hall. In other business, city resident Lynette Piep received permission from the council to hold a “mud bogs” event on her property on July 23. She offered to use the event to help raise money for the Old Rock Church project. The council also passed the water project resolution authorizing revenue bonds not to exceed $1.5 million. Robert Williams, Carol Williams, Diane Williams, Sherry Poduska (holding Tanner Poduska) come together to drop off 24 care packages to the Sanpete Valley Hospital. Family donates care packages to hospital MT. PLEASANT—A family holding a reunion at Fairview Lakes in Fairview Canyon donated 26 overnight care packages to Sanpete Valley Hospital last week. Over 100 members of the Williams family from Alpine, Lindon, California, Texas, and Washington made up the care packages during their tri-annual family reunion and took the packages to the hospital Friday, July 8. The packages each contained a pillow, a blanket, and toiletries. Family members signed up to bring different items, which were put together as a joint family service project. The family said they decided to make the care kits because members of their family have been stuck in the hospital overnight without any of the bare necessities, and the family wanted to help others to avoid the same situation. Robert Williams, one of the fathers at the reunion, said, “We are teaching the children to do service, and we want them to know that although we can’t help everyone, we should help where we can.” HELP WANTED The Sanpete Messenger, Gunnison Valley Edition would like to contract with a Gunnison Valley family (or couple) to handle distribution of newspapers to the post offices, storing and inserting advertising flyers in the papers, and handling overthe-counter-sales of the paper, and doing the weekly post office report.
