The Alexatuler lias Dovel-ope- d Very Itich Or. Prominent Salt Lakers Here Concerning 31ining Properties Located i Miles Westof Kpliraiin. "It runs 91302. in silver" was the answer made to a Register man by S. R. Marks, of Salt Lake.on Tues-day evening The above has refer-ence to the last assay made from the Alexander Mine, which is located in Cleveland district, not more than five miles from Ephrairn. It has been known for some time that considerable mineral must be locked up in the embrace of those hills in fact parties from Ephraim last year discovered rock that assayed from $300 to $500 in silver. Further, the country has been worked in days gone by as is indicat ed by an old dri:l that was found the e to years ago, and in later times a wheel which had no doubt been used in running some kind of min-ing works. Mr. Marks was one of a party of three Messrs. Oliver Hodgson, F. G. M. Smith and himself, and is in-terested in the Marker Claim Ad-joining the Alexantler, and is here to look after his in'.erest. Messrs. S. A. Kenner, editor of the Democrat and A. H. Cannon of the Juvenile, officers of the Alexander Mining company were brought here by the rich strike. There is no doubt but men will be put on both mines immediately and a good, live mining camp will be at our doors before we know it. The road from hete across the Sanpitch should be fixed immediate-ly so that Ephraim will be ready to take advantage of the first develope-ment- s. Mr. S. R. Marks and a party went north this morning, and reported everything favorably at the mines The Alexander will have a good force of men put to work immediat-ely and Mr. Mars said they would put a force to work on their claim, adjoining in a short time. There is a mistaken idea out that we wish to correct right now, that it is impossible to get from Ephraim to those mines. This is erronious as there is a road made there al-ready, there will be a good road made this summer. Manager Larson of the Regster is sit k. Pies. J. B. Maiben went north this inornitig. Ten cars of grain have been shipw ped from Ephraim since Monday. Mr. John Lowry passed through Ephraim, enroute to Nephi, Mon-day. Pres. Ptterson is slowly recover-ing. We wish him a hasty return to health. A gentleman from Utah Co., was in Ephrairn this week looking after fie Sugar B-'- tt industry. At $r,-- o per ton for freight this can be made a profitable busii ess. The city officers and the board of Trade, have had a misunderstand-ing about a billiard tabl i. Seutinel, We were not aware that Manti had a Board of Trade, and if it is so, what does a Board of Trade want with a billiard table anyway? Surveyor Hougaard was in Eph-- 1 aim Tuesday surveying the mill race fo: our proposed woolen fac-tory. To a Recistdr reporter he said there could be a 90 horse pow-er secured. When asked if there was as good power, as that, in any other part of the County, he said "Not yet known," Postmaster Larson received a let. ter from Miss Olivia Larson, dated New York, the 15. Miss Larson says that they will sail for Copenha-gen on the 18th in company with 25 Mormon Missionaries, among which number is Mr. Joseph Chris-tianso- n of Mayfield. She says the Elders were very kind and attentive and she anticipates a pleasant voy-age. Yesterday closed the term of the Latter-da- y Saints seminary. Mr. George Christensen, the principal, has given excellent satisfaction, and it is to be hoped he shall continue his labors in the same direction here again soon. As an educator, he has no superior in the county. And scholars and parents are well pleas-ed with his work. He goes to Eph-raim soon to take charge of the school there for five weeks. We are sorry to see him go. Pyra-mid. The Unions will soon have a con-test, probably at Ephraim, and we have no doubt will carry off the honors. A CHALLENGE. To the Ephraim baseball club: The Uniun baseball club of Mt. Pleasant here with challenge you to play a game of baseball on April 35th, at a o'clock p. m. for cham-pionship. Peter A. Larsen, captain. Editorial Notes. in. ; Secretary Foster acknowledges ,that there will be no Treasury sur plus next year. Republican editors 'will please take notice. Mr. Harrison travels on free .special trains, when Mr Cleveland was President and wished to go any-where he bought a ticket just as ry people always do. No com-ment is necessary. Afn. Blaine's intercontinental monetary conference was a decided failure, as far as results are concern-ed. All admitted the desirability of a coin that would circulate in all A erican countries at the same value but it was shown that the difficulties in providing such a coin are at the present time insurmountable. Af. Harrison has asserted his . ' authority and put a break on Mr. Blaine's reciprocity policy, as far ai it relates to Canada, by peremrtor-- , ly ordering the Secretary of State jBot to enter upon even informal ne-gotiations with the Canadian com-missioners until it shall suit his(Har jison's) convenience to De present and to take part therein. What makes this action all the more hum-iliating to Mr. Blaine is that he had agreed, and appointed a time, to listen to an informal presentation of the Canadian government on this subject, and the representatives of ,Canada were already in Washington or that purpose when the Harri .son veto was given to him. It seems ,to us that in addition to being a snub ,to Mr. Blaine this action on .the part of Mr. Harrison was decid-- . edly discourteous to Canada, and a discourtesy that was entirely uncall-ed for. It would have neither in-jured nor committed this country to have heard the informal prepositions of the Canadians, and, unless Mt. Harrison has entirely lost confidence jn his Secretary of State, there is no good reason why he should person-ally listen to these propositions. SUMMONS. In the Justice's Court.
