They are all ccmparativly young men and nearly all married ol course to young wives. It often hap-pens as in the present instance that they are away from home during a war foi-- o ie or even three orfo.ir ears, The nat ral result is that many young wives left behind do not prove to be Lucretias, The Cossacks are puite aware of this, and many of them upon starting from heme buy a white scarf or handkerchief which they take with them. Upon enter-ing Uieir villages, the whole population women, gills, old men and children rome out to meet them including the wives ol the returning wanderers Now those of the wives who have been ul to their lords, of which there is usually a considerable sprinkling, go rd kneel before them in the toad, put their faces in the dust, and place their husbands foot upon their necks, this is a confession of their guilt and at the same time a prayer for forgiveness. If the hus-band then covers his wife's head with the white scarf it means that he forgives her, asks no questions and oblite.ates the past. In this case no one has a right even to reproch the wife with her 'incon-stancy, and if any one should be rash enough to do so he would have to to the husband who is the protector of the wife's honor. If the white handkerchief is not produced the woman returns straight to her father's house without returning again to her husbands dwelling, and a divorce is pronounced. Althoughjthera is generally a cosiderable sprinkling of women who come lorward to kneel down and put their faces in the dust, it rarely happens that tbey are not forgiven. A very tragical cast however is re'ated in which the reverse took place A returning Cossack was informed by a malicious neighbor belora he reached his home that bis wife had been unlailh-witbo-waiting to ta U th guilty wo-a- a woald corae forward and eoofas hr sins. Tbi com rads ofthavCoaiack pracei-ve- d that he had all of a sudden taken to drink and dissipation although he was not a man given to those vices. When he reached the village his wife, as he feared came forward knelt before him put her lace in the dust at his leet. The spectator saw him look at her as she lay in the dust for a long time. Two or three time he put his hand iu his breast for the han-dkerchief as if he were going to cover the 'repentant woman'shead two or three times the movements was restrained Final 1 as if driven by a sudden impluse he all at once drew bis shaske and with one stroke severed her head from ber body. The punishment (or the crime was two month's imprisonment while the malicious neighbor who had taken the trouble to infuim him beforehand ol his wife's misconduct was sentenced to pii.OQ for three yeais.
