At thsi Pagini felt this to be an impe-rtinent same, and mentioned the Ucts, with some show of temper, to his Ineud, tlie Chevalier de Barde. Tlie latter took tlie shoe to a violin maker, who conven-ed it into a lemaikahly sweet tuned in-strument. Paijiiiiiii was picssed to tiv the shoe violin in public. He not only did so, but performed npon ;it some of his most difficult fanlasic, which facts, in the hand writing cf the violiuisi.ate now to be seen on the cuiious violin. I those lriionned upon the subject, it is well known that sulphur 3a 1 nitre alone, leaving out of con-i- deration all the other minerals n.emioned, are sufticent to produce, directly and indirectly, almost a world wealth; Iiecauhe, wi'.h these sub stances sulphuric acid can be made, which is a basis of numerous lucra-tive industries. It is said that the 'wealth and prosperity of a country can be measured by the amount of sulphuric acid it pre duces. T he most common way of manu-facturing carbonate of soda is the lMethod known as the Le Blanc Pro-cess. It consists in the first place of converting common salt into glauber salt by heatiug the former with sulphuric acid, and afterwards of changing the glauber salt into carbonate of soda by the proper use of limestone and coal. Now, in our much-favore- d country, nature does nearly half of this work for man in great Sftlt Lake, during tlie cold winter season. At a low temperature sulphate of soda (g'aubcr salt) will cryslaiize out of its solution, and when in solution in water like that of Lake will on cryst dization come to the surface. Again, although glauber salt may not at ordinary temperatures exist in a solution there is a possibility of its being formed in the solution at lower temperatures, by a re arrange meat of its constituent pans which may lie present in other combina-tion. (lreat Salt Lake during our cold winters deposits on its surface nu-merous quantities of this salt which drifts to the shore where it could be gathered, conveyed away, and us?d in the manufacturing of carbonate of soda. Furthermore, as almd ance of liniccait be easily produced and s our Territory is supplied with any quantity of silicia, we have nti our doors with the carbonate of soda, the main substances, in great quantities, used in l! e manufacturing of window glass and also bottle g ass. In this strain we could continue lo some length in showing the many resources the Territory possesses which, if properly utilized, would put our comiron-wealth- , into a condition of marvelous prosperity. In the midst of abundance of such resources as these, Applied Chemistry takes the lead in giving the necessary information as to what could be done in the n 0 wealth. No pains nor means, therefore, should be spared in making these brache of learn-ing one of the leading features of our Territorial University. With young men thoroughly educated in this imporant part of Chemisitry industries of Vast importance would not be 'o:ig in springing up in all parts of the Territory. Trof. T, T, Kingsbury. OUR INDUSTRIES." FroM the University Lantein. r. One among the important features in the department of applied science ior the School of Mines about to be established in the University" of jDeseret is that cf applied Chemistry. This branch of chemistry is inti-'mate-connected wilh many of the arianufacturing industries of a coni-;mtioit-and plays a part equally as important as, if not more impor ttartt, than any other science cr art, fit deals directly with chemical works, and has more or less to do with many other industries. . v Our Territory is rich in mineral resources, and it stands in this, res-rpe-second to no other state or (territory in the Union. It abounds tin corrnion sait, glauber salt, coal, aimestone, silicia f the finest qual-ities in severai respects, cement sha-le-, alum shale, sulphur, iron pyrites and many other minerals jwhich lie at the foundation of industries, and which could be made the, sources of fast rerenue for our Territory. His comrades followed him with their glasses, not speaking a word. The Kienchmen opposite seemed puzzled.
