Show flinty anty ap appeals peals for the services of dr bayles according to latest report the services of dr wesly L bayles for the people of san juan jua county may be assured as result or of the the continuous effort on the part of our county welfare director wm win ervin palmer and the co opera tion of of the state county and civic organizations during thelast the past ten days or more appeals were sent out in the form of letters and telegrams from civic organizations and individuals divi duals A A petition was prepared p and sent to washington with gna natures tures of nearly 1400 per S sw iia throughout the county As many persons as it was possible to reach responded and there were 14 sheets of names in addition to the signatures of organization leaders mailed out on monday to the adjutant generals office these were accompanied by the signed resignation of dr wesly bayles as lieutenant in the medical reserve corps of the US army in keeping with the most recent developments of the case while dr bayles would prefer to answer the call to serve the united states army he realizes the urgent need for his services as outlined in the letters and telegrams sent previously having seen copies of all of them as well as copies of letters and telegrams received in reply we toa to appreciate the tremendous effort made to retain dr bayles his resignation from the medical reserve corps was necessary however and was advised A portion of the letter sent to the adjutant general follows 1 I take this action in response to local demand arising out of the desperate need for medical services with rio no replacement doctor available this need is attested by the enclosed petition from san juan coatny residents and is supported and verified by the letters and wires recently submitted to your office to the surgeon general and to representatives in washington D C fr arm n local organizations groups and individuals divi duals and from state sources at the suggestion of dr A C callister chairman of procurement and assignment for utah I 1 am also enclosing for your information a copy of my order to duty I 1 trust this letter will be favorably considered and that my rl rr bation aaion will be duly accepted say nl very respectfully wesly lyman bayles M D blanding utah A paragraph or two from a letter sent to our state representatives at washington last week following the telegram which was a resume of the petition published in a previous issue of the record will follow which emphasizes the position and the decision of dr bayles replies from congressmen and senators have been gratifying and we know that their support has been added to that sent from local sources all of which combined will gain the desired end we close with excerpts from continued on page eight COUNTY APPEALS 0 continued from page 1 the letter sent to the adjutant general and to to our state representatives there has been no over ampha sis or exaggeration of the true situation or the seriousness of th the e plight we face in this large and distant area with the threatened loss oss to the army of the only doctor in this section of the state dr bayles our problem cannot be duplicated anywhere in this nation and we stand on that challenge some may say the army needs young doctors you should find an older substitute physician that was the suggestion of the army officials at fort douglas and it has been tried however the state slate committee for procurement and assignment admit their inability to find available doctors we too know something of the problem and the difficulty of finding doctors willing to settle and serve in this vast sparsely settled and poor county it is only after years of struggle and planning with the guarantee and financial subsidy of local agencies that we now have even one doctor furthermore the work of a doctor in this setting demands long hours night work and gruel ling drives over long and difficult roads an older doctor if one could be found could not follow the pace of dr bayles in caring for the entire county population the officers men and families of the vanadium corporation of america and the processing needs of the local selective service board please do all that you can immediately and advise us of any further steps or action we may helpfully take A letter from congressman W K grainger informed the county commissioners t that h a t S senator e n a t 0 r thomas had also called on the adjutant general to intercede for the release of dr bayles he was assured that dr bayles would be released shortly although he might be called to report for duty the letter also included a short paragraph commending the fine operation cooperation co of the entire county in soliciting the release of dr bayles he also stated 1 I commend you for your well organized efforts for such a worthy ap pp cause we hope to tell you next week that the release of dr bayles to this county has been granted |
