Commission prepares for summer programs Despite recent snows the spring and summer problems of fire, weeds, and roads dominated county commission meeting Mon- day. At the request of County Fire Warden Frank Mor- rell the commission ordered fire season the county bethroughout a closed and ending ginning May October 31. During the closed fire season it is illegal to start a fire without a written permit. The county currently is in the process of hiring a new assistant fire warden for the season. 1 The noxious weed control program for the county will proceed much as last year. The billing process will be slightly altered to make it easier to notify land owners with noxious weeds on their property. The commission hesitated to add jointed goat grass to the noxious weed list and chose instead to ask the Extension Office to provide education to land owners who need to control the weeds on their own land. The county hired Brian Goodwine and Jimmy Myrick to work full time for the weed control for the sum-me- r. The county weed depart ment is also pre-parin- g to support the new federal requirements to certify fields for use and crops weed-fre- e as feed on Forest Service lands. The county currently is planning summer road construction and improvement. Process Facilitator Edward Tapaha reported to the commission that a new hospital in Shiprock will be opening this summer with 75 beds. It will not ease the health care crunch in the area though, since the operating budget will only support a staff adequate to take care of the current 35 bed faright-of-wa- cility. Because of liability insurance costs, the commission is considering closing several small dirt air strips in the county. The strips in question are not on county land but are maintained by the county road department. In order to further reduce liability insurance prob- lems, the county will require that anyone using mem- bers are Del Hunter, Bill Christensen, Gail Northern, Doug Pehrson, and Wanda Franklin. The committee will review county safety policy and investigate county ac- cidents. In other business, the commission approved the contract for transportation and meals for senior citizens. The budget is $6,038. The county's appropriation is only $325 with the rest of the budget coming from federal and state appropriations. Commissioners also approved the purchase of a chain saw for the county fire department, and new memory support for two county computers. Weed-- a virtues have not yet been discovered.
