Show Atomic Energy Commission has negotiated or is negotiating with only six of the country's 24 uranium mills for the purchase of concentrates during the period Foreign Uranium (continued from page one) would displace any domestic ma. texial available for production at the $8 per pound price. He asked the committees support in limiting the exercitng of such options to that needed to supplement the domestic capacity to meet the countrys uranium needs. Romney also noted that the 1962-6- 6. near-futu- re abilities to plan future operations while extension contract provisions remain uncertain. Phone JU (continued from page one) from the AEC that shippers would not be penalized on hauling costs if any change is made in the status of the Monticello mill, and that the buying station would be kept open. And I have been working with HHFA to get changes made in the terms of the bond contracts with the community of Monticello in the event that the repayment schedule becomes too burdensome for the community. And I have been working with Small Business Administration to see what help can be given Monticello if the AEC decision goes through. In view of the above, I think it is unfair to imply, as did the article in the San Juan Record of April 17,' that I am dragging my feet on this matter. One thing which must be pointed out in connection with this entire question is the fact that I as a Senator have no power to make a decision. The AEC is an independent commission, not controlled by the Joint Committee, and it has Jhe power to make its own decisions in matters of this kind. I can present the arguments in favor of keeping the mill open, and I have done so, but there is no way I can force the committee to take action on an administrative decision properly within the jurisdiction of the AEC. I believe you . (Chandler) and your colleagues in San Juan county have done an outstanding job of puesenting Monticellos case to the AEC, and you can pride yourself on having done everything possible to keep the mill open.
