Show r SAN JUAN RECORD Thursday, July Si, Utah marshes this year are producing normal or better populations of duck broods, with a decided decline of 30 or more in numbers of young geese brooded. These facts are shown in a report from a recent ground and airplane survey of major waterfowl breeding areas in the state. The Department of Fish and Game said the decline in numbers of geese would probably call for a reduction in bag limits for the Canada and other geese of the dark species during the coming fall waterfowl season. It was noted that 909c of all Canada geese harvested within the state are brooded on Utah and Idaho marshes. Idaho counts for this species are also under those of last year. Waterfowl managers say that banding returns indicate overshooting is a major reason for the present decline in Canada geese numbers. Another factor contributing to fewer and smaller goose broods this year was the extemely bad weather conditions on the marshes the during l nesting season. The report further notes that increased hunting pressure plus other normal mortality losses under present harvest regulations the total yearly production of have taken a minimum of 50 of geese. This mortality rate is known to be high if present are to be goose populations maintained. Both state and other flyway reports in general indicate a good duck population for the fall hunts. More ducks are annually raised on Utah marshes than are taken by gunners in the state each fall. Many birds taken are migratory into the state while many birds raised on local March-Apri- Page 3 1955, More Floor Space For Riley Drug p .
