Show spotlighting utah arches monument road ex extended tended work was begun october 13 extending the road in the arches national monument from the win dows 40 section to the devi devils 1 s ga garden r i fiery furnace and delicate arch sections under an agreement I 1 with the alie state department of publicity and industrial development 1 allotted by the commission will be used to reach these sections I 1 which up to now have been inaccessible ces sible to cars county road crews and equipment is being used and the work is under the supervision and approval of the national parks service sees greater tourist business I 1 rulon S howells commissioner state department of publicity and industrial development has returned from the national of travel officials convention at chicago in which th the e state of utah has a membership representatives I 1 senta tives from practically every state publicity department in the union were present along with national travel vacation and automobile association authorities rail bus line and publishing officials catering to the tourist is is one of the fastest growing businesses in america mr air howells said on his return and next season well experience a continued growth of the tourist business in utah which subsequently will increase prosperity in this area while at the convention many publishers requested more and more publicity department photos and factual information concerning utah and tier her scenic attractions tr mr howells pointed out escalante desert blooms on the map that vast area west of cedar city is indicated as the escalante desert until a few years ago it was just a sagebrush covered sheep range today however the desert is being reclaimed and is producing some of the finest alfalfa and Dota potatoes toes in utah small and large farm operators are making the escalante areaway area pay dividends the largest operator in the region is the man and company they have reclaimed 2000 acres which are now under cultivation five miles north of enterprise and 35 miles west of cedar city electrical service demanded by utah farmers rural electrification administration reports an increasing demand for rural electrification about farm units in the 41 western states were served w with it h electricity for the first time in the year ending june 30 1947 in the 11 western states farms out of are electrified and 61 of all U S farms now have power and light in utah out of farms are being served or an average of 78 during the past year new units were added road information available at service stations over service stations have availed themselves of a road information service now being offered by the department of publicity and industrial development and prepared in conjunction with 1 the state road department this service provides current information on road conditions it lists I 1 the locations where is be ing done location of bridges and other construction length of roads and detours if any and other oth er pertinent information on aft construction st jobs roads or summits closed by snow are also a part of this service ervice st the public can obtain this information from service stations service stations not receiving 1 the service can have their names added to the list upon request |
