Attorney Held to Be Reprieve Cause jinricksha and a United States marine corps ambulance on Seymour road Shanghai China January 31 1935 today resulted in a special message - of President The Roosevglt to congress president transferred a report of the secretary of state recommending the enactment of legislation authorizing an appropriation of $500 to Mrs N W Shumberg “nationality indeterminable’’ as compensation for Injuries received in the collision Mrs Shumberg was a passenger in the ricksha Nothing was said of the coolie Who pulled the conveyance or his ricksha Continued From Page Five s courtroom to face a jury drawn from neighbors of the Lindberghs Pope’s argument was so convincing to Hoffman that the governor immediately began to gather data on the case He readJM transcript ' of the trial he examined exhibits such as the kidnaper’s ladder and the ransom notes he kept himself available to all persons who professed to have knowledge of the rime And finally one night last October he slipped into Trenton state prison walked down the corridor and talked to Hauptmann Up to that point the outside world knew nothing about Hoffman’s interest in Hauptmann As soon as the Hoffman’s facts became public political enemies charged he was motivated by a desire for publicity and political advantage rather than by genuine interest in the case The United Press’ informant refused to offer an opinion on whether Hoffman deliberately planned to ride to on the nationwide prominence Hauptmann case or merely was placed in a position where he started something he couldn't stop No New Evidenoe But on one point the informant was positive— there is not a shred of legitimate new evidence before Hoffman and he did not make his decision to grant a reprieve on the basis of new evidence That decision was taken on what Pope told him and what he learned for himself after the country lawyer had started the governor to thinking Since then the issues have become mixed up with New Jersey politics Hoffman’s statement today reflected that In it heomblned an attempt fo justify then granting of the reprieve and a reply to political opponents who are talking of trying to Impeach him The statement brought into the open a fact that has been known to New Jersey authorities for months — that Hauptmann has been offered as high as $75000 to be left his wife and child in exchange for a confession The governor said Hauptmann rejected the offer “If Impeachment is the price that must be paid for daring to follow the dictates of my own conscience I am ready to pay it" Hoffman said “A good investigation- of the Lindbergh case might be a healthy thing If an Investigation is started I will not run away "I have never expressed an opinion upon the guilt or innocence of Hauptmann I do however share with hundreds of thousands of our people the doubt as to the value rf the evidence that placed him in the Lindbergh nursery on the night of the crime I cjo wonder what part passion and prejudice played in the conviction of a man who was ' - previously tried and convicted In the columns of many of our news- papers “I do on the basis of evidence in my hands question the truthfulness and mental competency of some of the chief witnesses for the state I do doubt that this crime could have been committed by any one man and I am worried about the eagerness of some of our law enforcement agencies to bring about the death of this one man so that the books may be closed in the thought that another great crime mystery has been successfully solved— an eagerness that is reflected in the order given to the banks to no longer bother about looking for the balance of the ransom money when approximately $30000 was still in circulation ‘I make no apology for granting a reprieve In this case During this period we may calmly consider some of the baffling phases of the crime and the subsequent trial of Hauptmann I intend to give to the public in due course my reasons for entertaining the doubts that I have expressed and I Intend to direct the state police to continue their search forany other person or persons involved in the crime Col- Statistics Obituaries
