Show RELIGION Saturday October The Salt Lake Tribune Vatican Stands by Divorce Doctrine uit an eir RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE is The Vatican Friday refused to ' its longstanding doctrine change ' that divorced Catholics who re marry outside of the church cannot receive Holy Communion ' Written by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and proved by Pope John Paul II the document stated that the ruling "is not at all a or a ' discrimination punishment against the divorced and remarried but rather expresses an objective situation that of itself renders impossible ' the reception of Holy Comm- Lire ist Lug re ten he Its :an Lng union" The statement was signed by the head of the doctrinal congre ) gation Cardinal Joseph Ratzinier one of the pope's most trusted theologians The letter was seen as a re- sponse to a statement written last year by four German bishops in Sociologists Ponder 'Footprints of Faith' which they attempted to find some leeway in the teaching The bishops agreed that remarried persons generally cannot receive the sacrament of the Eucharist But they suggested that Catholics who are convinced that their first marriage was invalid but who are unable to obtain annulments from church tribunals could receive the sacrament The Catholic Church does not allow divorce although it frequently declares marriages null in which case a person is free to marry again "Members of the faithful who live together as husband and wife with persons other than their legitimate spouses may not receive Holy Communion" the document stated Anyone who defies that ruling "openly contradicts the Church's teaching" the letter said By Karen R Long RELIGIOUS RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE Ely 14 - ne ut - es n le re Bowing to a yearlong firestorm of criticism the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America an' nounced this week it is abandoning an effort to adopt a churchwide policy statement on human sexuality The Lutherans also said they would undertake a thorough review of the way the denomination communicates on social issues A draft document on sexuality was released In October 1993 and the content and way it became public have been under intense th weak-minde- d criticism ever since Among the criticisms: Most Lutherans heard about the document not from clergy or congregational channels but from news accounts stressing its most controversial aspects While church officials charged that news accounts were simplistic and sensational thousands of irate church members nonetheless flooded the Chicago headquarters with demands that the draft be scrapped and staff members responsible be 21-pa- fired RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE The Orthodox Church in Amer- ica will mark two historic events in Anchorage today canonizing a ti native Alaskan saint and consecrating the uses of religion mainly were social Where one finds religion he noticed one inevitably finds groups Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm saw religion as humanistic as in the Christian teaching of "the kingdom of God is within you" or the Jewish belief that every individual contains a spark of the divine The other edge Fromm argued was trouble He said organized religion showed a penchant for demeaning people by projecting the best of human qualities on a God who must be worshiped out of personal weakness For most of the 20th century social scientists have had little good to say about religion As a group they are less religiously observant than the populations they study and less religious than physical scientists surveys have found But Kenneth Pargament a psychology professor at Ohio's Bowling Green State University has bucked this dismissive trend He and a few scattered colleagues take religion seriously enough to spend their careers studying its effects on people's lives "We don't measure God" Pargament said "The existehce of God is something we can't know We are interested in studying what some have called the footprints of two-edge- traversed the Alaskan wilderness baptizing converts solemnizing marriages tending to the sick and burying the dead He is the first Alaskan priest to be recognized as saint in the Orthodox Church The cathedral a focal point for Alaska's 20000 Orthodca believers with its 12 blue domes topped with gold crosses will be consecrated at the same time Father Yakov is canonized The Orthodox way of proclaiming saints differs significantly from the Roman Catholic Church which requires proof of miracles performed as a result of heavenly intervention Priest Named in Suit Abandons Vocation 46 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS — A Roman Harsham resigned from the diocese on Friday said Ray George spokesman for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Steven Cook sued Harsham and Bernardin in 1993 claiming they sexually abused him while he was in high school during the 1970s They denied the charges sought support from clergy or fellow church members coped better with Gulf War anxiety than those who sought support through nonreligious channels Students who pleaded with God for a miracle or started on a campaign of good deeds coped poorly at first but did better over time Perhaps the shortness of the war — six weeks — struck some students as in fact a miraculous answer to their prayers Pargament said Psychologists who view these results as mere ways to reduce stress are missing the richness and complexity that religion brings into some people's lives Pargament said And religious people who tell him that psychology has no business poking around in the sacred are missing an opportunity as well he said "Work with religious organizations may represent one of the last great taboos for professional psychology" Pargament noted a taboo he himself has breached His team of graduate students measured congregational expectations in a small Methodist church that showed their minister was so overworked and the church so understaffed that both the preacher and the place were in peril In surveying one large Roman Catholic church the Pargament team found that members were troubled by its impersonal nature Church leaders decided to start more activities to foster closer more frequent contact among members "I have found that it's one thing to speak of religion in the abstract and quite another to experience it in the midst of trouble" Pargament said "The results have been quite promising and very interesting We are starting to learn more about the ways religion helps people hold on to the things they most value and if necessary change the things they care about most deeply" And the prints he says leave much to ponder Studies of heart transplant recipients who believe in and worship God show they have less anxiety and depression than transplant recipients with weak or no religious conviction Those coping with a recent death follow the same pattern The same goes for people struggling to take care of a family member with cancer or Alzheimer's disease A 1993 study found that parents of infants who died of syndrome distress to the experienced less long-terdegree they were religious as measured by frequency of prayer and worship The more religious parents were able to find more meaning in their loss than the more secular parents "Interestingly the religious parents engaged in more rather than less cognitive processing of the event suggesting that far from denying the experience they were actively struggling to work through it" Pargament observed Researchers have some evidence that those faced with uncontrollable events pick up the pace of their spiritual activity A Cornell University researcher discovered that the occult rose in popularity in Israel right after the 1973 Yom Kippur War which gravely threatened a sense of Israeli invincibility Pargament investigates how people use religion — effectively and ineffectively — in times of trouble He studied the coping of Bowling Green students two days before the Persian Gulf War broke out in 1991 and again one week after fighting with Iraq ended His findings will be published in December in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion Pargament discovered that students who Many Buck the System Take Religion Seriously
