Friday night the Democratic representative said there are 34 million uninsured Americans and 70 million underinsured people in the nation lie further pointed out that 14 percent of the country's gross national product will be used to pay for health care this year And he estimates the cost of health care will double by 1997 He outlined three possible solupublic health tions that included — programs he refers to as "Medicare for all" "pay or play" and "single player" plans All three plans rely on federal government involvement He has received little feedback in support of any of the three "All three public approaches are fatally flawed" he said because their cost containment is based on fee regulation care-typ- e We have many problems and - requiring the government or businesses to pay portions of medical costs won't work" he said Until the country focuses on the reason for health care cost increases we will continue to have "h Ige problems" He favors a targeted apcost probproach to health-car- e lems One example was to increase taxes on alcohol and tobacco to pay for related illnesses and deaths "One in six deaths in this country is directly attributed to smoking" he said "Not only should we increase the tax on tobacco we should eliminate tobacco subsidies" He said society is not dealing well with death He said some estimates indicate that 50 percent of the cost of health care is spent on saving premature infants and on prolonging life during the last six months of an illness "You have the right and the responsibility to tell physicians what you want them to do via a living will" he said OBITUARIES PAID PUBLIC NOTICES Raymond PAID PUBLIC NOTICES 77 age 4 4 — 1939 in Salt Lake City later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple He was a High Priest in the Rose Park
