This one had a lot of metal tubing, a blueprint and a video tape of step 1 through step 49 It cost $2,500, plus another $40,000 or so to "glue in an engine, mount tires and buy a few barrels of alcohol. a superYou see, Raymer's got the real thing charged, alcohol-burnin- g quarter mile in about 6 hour. and is looking for his 7th this weekend in Bonneville Raceway Parks showdown. i I dragster that runs through the j seconds at around 205 miles per "It's the kit not a real new concept, but it's sort of taking over the racing scene, explained the Raymer in a telephone interview from his shop where he and his dad, Vernon, were busily preparing the dragster for a trip to Bonneville Raceway Park's National Hot Rod Association event his weekend. "For one thing, the kit eliminates a lot of the guesswork in building a chassis. Mostly, it helps those who are going into it for the first time, explained Raymer. Raymer neither guesses at his trade, nor is he a rookie. For six straight seasons, including an NHRA World V, Brian Raymer of Aurora, Colo., has won six straight NHRA Division 5 drag titles Former Jazz Coach Goes to CBA SALE! 721 RADIALS 4 ... Kl? PAY A IL7 AT raGHCJECIG! But then the teams owners decided to retain Chaney for the rest of the season, and they subsequently fired Scheer at seasons end, dashing any chances that Nissalke might be considered for the coaching job. "I think a team has got to show they have enough guts to make a change, said Nissalke, in explainn ing that he didnt want to allow the talks with the Clippers to go very far as long as Chaney still held the job. I said Id be interested, but I dont want to get involved talking unless you make a change season (Stepien was out of the Cavs picture by then), Nissalke has been paid by the Cavs, but he said that his payments ran out June 1st. Nissalke, who coached the Jazz during their first 2 seasons in Utah, has ventured into the CBA before. He accepted an offer to coach the Las Vegas Silvers in the fall of 1982, but it was shortly thereafter that the Cavs called and he went on to coach Cleveland for two seasons. So, as he says, coaching in the CBA will not be a comedown for me. Nissalke is not the first former NBA coach to take a head job in the CBA. Former NBA head coaches Herb Brown and Bill Musselman have been successful in the CBA. And John Killilea. a NBA assistant who came to Salt Lake long-timCity to help the Jazz at their veterans camp last fall, has just taken the head job at Topeka. Former NBA players Phil Jackson, Cazzie Russell, and Norm Van Lier are coaching in the CBA, and, of course, Jerry Sloan was a CBA head coach at the time the Jazz lured him to Utah in November of 1983-8- Bonneville NHRA Nolei: Gules open Friday at noon (or testing and . discount . tuning for (tie some 300 hot rods expected . The move reunites Nissalke with Ted Stepien, the owner of the Jets, who was the man who hired Nissalke to be the coach of Iom rsis',a ke the Cleveland Cavaliers four years ago. With this move, the natural assumption is that Nissalke wants to get back into the coaching in the NBA, and he doesnt deny it, saying "Guys that Ive talked to say that, if you want to " stay in coaching, youve got to stay in He noted that Stepibn has told him, "If an NBA job comes along, youre on the next plane and you wont owe me a cent. Nissalke revealed that Stepien is giving him a four-yea- r contract and that it is a personal-service- s contract, which means that Stepien can pay Nissalke considerably more than the CBAs $35,000 coach. cap for a first-yea- r Since being fired by the Cavaliers following the NHRA Championship run in 1981, Raymer has won the 5 title Division Winning at Bonneville this weekend is the only way Raymer can preserve his streak "It's not very hard to figure out We have to win the race Know how tough that s going to be" Raymer asked The guy who is leading the division Dennis Lucas of Grand Junction, Colo is coming to Salt Lake only to keep us from winning " The situation is this in Division 5's alcohol dragster division Lucas has counted all the races (5) he can for the division title and has 3,112 points. Raymer, with 2,308 id a win would points, can count one more (Bonneville) a. crown division 3.113 and the him by one point. points give Td do the same thing Lucas is doing in trying to throw up a roadblock. Hey, there's a $3,000 bonus for winning the division and a free pass NHRA Gold Card to all national events for a season, Raymer pointed out. Returning to the CBA makes even more sense this time around for Nissalke, given his relationships with Stepien and with Carl Scheer, who was recently named the league's new commissioner. Nissalke said he came "very, very close" to going to work for Scheer last season Scheer was general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Nissalke was rumored as a candidate to replace Coach Don Chaney, who was on thin ice at the time. Nissalke said the rekindled hookup with Stepien began last February, when he went down to Pensacola for a few days to evaluate the team for the owner. Then, he said, Stepien called him a couple of months later and talked about the coaching position. A month ago, Stepien, Scheer, and Nissalke met in Los Angeles to discuss the matter further. And now Tom Nissalke is ready to get back into pro coaching W3SJB O IA1PORT CAR RADIAL steel befed radial Fit s most imported cars Sale ends July 26.
