Dugall Very Happy With New Utah Duties I Young Parish to Worship in New Facilities Special to The Tribune SANDY Members of St. Thomas More Catholic Church began meeting three years ago in the By Melinda Soworby Tribune Church Editor He hastiT even met SANDY most of the congregation at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, but the Rev. Robin Dugall is sure the American Lutheran Church is the place he has been called to and he plf.ns to stay a good many years. The Rev. Mr. Dugall is the new associate pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 8575 S. 700 East. He began the position last Wednesday, and he is still adjusting to Utah and duties at the church. As associate pastor, the Rev. Mr. Dugall will work in partnership with the Rev. Tom Ashbrook. pastor of Good Shepherd. The Rev. Mr. Ashbrook will serve as team leader, the Rev. Mr. Dugall explains. The full scope of his duties have yet to be decided. The Rev. Mr. Dugall said he will be working in the religious education area as well as working with Good Shepherd's youth pastor, the Rev. Tom Anderson. The Rev. Mr. Dugall admits to having a love of people and believes he has the ability to get along with them. He wants members of Good Shepherd to get to know him is an individual, not only as a pastor. He said sometimes titles intimidate people who put a pastor on a pedestal. Therefore, he wants members to call him Robin and he will continue to dress in the casual manner comfortable to him and not intimidating to others. He believes Good Shepherd chose to call him because, they were looking for a certain type of person theologically. I'm the type of person that stresses an aliveness in my faith and a personal relationship with the Lord, the Rev. Mr. Dugall said. He adds he is open to ideas for evangelism and education, while stressing the Bible as the authority. Evangelism is a major focus of the Rev. Mr. Dugall's ministry. He believes a pastors duty is to encourage members of his flock to take the Gospel into their lives, he said. He feels the Christian Church hasn't emphasized that enough. He enjoys all aspects of the ministry, right down to the menial tasks when they focus on personal relationships. Developing those relationships with individual congregation members is Mr. Dugalls number one objective, he said. The Rev. Mr. Dugalls last calling was at a Lutheran Church in the San Francisco Bay area. He said he is looking forward to the slower lifestyle and the greater emphasis on family Utah offers. That will give him a chance to concentrate more deeply on his family and his faith and that is overwhelmingly attractive, he said. He said since beginning at the church, he has already become close Cannon Mortuary. Last week, the Most Rev. William K. Weigand, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, dedicated a new building for the parish at 3015 Creek Road (7800 South). During the dedication ceremonies, the Right Rev. Mark. 0. pastor of St. Vincent's Church, offered the homily, telling those in attendance the church community was a building up of the body of Christ and an inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Although most parishes take about four years to become estab-- , lished and complete the first phase of a building program, the St. Thomas More Parish completed the process in only three years. The Rev. Maurice J. Moran, pastor of the church, attributes the rapid building program to the phenomenal population growth in the area and to the income level of parishioners. Ben-vegn- Former Members The new parish began with many former members of St. Vincents Church and Blessed Sacrament Church. However, out of 500 families living within the boundries of the new congregation, only 120 were prepared to attend the new parish in the mortuary, Father Moran said. All that changed as plans for the church, building were made. By the time the members were ready to break ground for the church, it had grown to 250 families and by time the church informally opened last July 10, there were 350 families, said Father Moran. Today there are 410 member families and some Sundays, there are more people attending Mass than the room, presently being used as a sanctuary, will hold. The makeup of St. Thomas More Parish is unique. 'Many members have recently moved to Utah with the high technology companies and with such companies as Western Air Lines and American Express. of the parishs memTwenty-nin- e bers are engineers. Father Moran said the parish has members from every state and from Guam, but only 40 of the church's families are native Utahns. Expanding Companies The parish tends to attract those new to Utah, Father Moran believes, because those people are moving in with the expanding companies, and because they feel like theyre getting in on the ground floor of the church. Mr. McDonald said moral laxity offers the promise of paradise, but instead leaves "the crush of anguish. He believes, anguish is occasioned w hen something less than pure comes into conflict wTith our deep inner purity. However, Mr. McDonald adds that inner torment often becomes a rallying point from which people turn to God for help and redemption. He said not personal condemnation that brings healing, but the deep compassion illustrated by Christ Jesus as he patiently uncovered the purity already present in those tempted by immorality.
