Ruth Burkett, a minister of the Unity faith. A 315 donation is requested. Ms. Burkett believes forgiveness is the core of the workshop. However, she emphasizes the course goes beyond the usual definition of forgiveness. The usual definition is, you hurt me, but in my goodness, Ill forgive you, Ms. Burkett said. However, she believes that definition only reinforces the guilt and obscures the love both parties need. Through the course, participants learn to go beyond the hurt and hear the call for C love from the other person. illufor their them In forgiving sions untruths, we can forgive ourselves for our illusions, she said. The course makes use of a text and workbook, as well as a manual for ACIM teachers. The course was developed by Dr. Helen Schucman,' a research psychologist on the faculty of the Columbia Medical Center, who has declared herself a practicing, militant atheist, Ms. Burkett said. Beginning in 1965, Dr. Schucman and an assistant began taking notes on what Dr. Schucman called her "heightened visual imageries, or visions, Ms. Burkett explained. The visions went against everything she believed, but it made sense to the doctor and once she started writing, she never considered quitting, she said. . The text states that we were created by God and are an extension of his thought, Ms. Burkett said, adding, according to the text, we are spirit, light and love and have never been less nor can be. The text explains we wanted a physical life in a material world and now we find ourselves in a dream, thinking and believing we are separated from our father ... split off from our source. And from this unreal premise we made a false start referred to as ego in the course and made a belief system which said birth, pain, pleasure- and death are real on this plane,- Ms. Burkett explained. The ego and a belief system that does not bring peace are synonymous in the course. According to the course, the sense of separation from God became the basis for our guilt. Because we cant handle our guilt, we project it onto others, the Rev. Ms. Burkett said. The miracles the course refers to are the shifts in perception that are made in our minds. Little Interest He's been thinking about a Bible institute for years, yet until recently he found little interest in the religious community. Last winter, Mr. Mulholland decided to quit forcing the issue, leaving the possibility of an institute in Gods hands. It was at a prayer group of the Evangelical Ministers Association, that Mr. Mulholland found the interest to begin an institute. Once the group began getting specific on a statement of purpose, Mr. Mulholland could see an institute was indeed a possibility. It was at that point he was asked to serve as president of the school. Those interested in enrolling or in obtaining further information may write P.O. Box 2096, Salt Lake City, Students may also Utah, 84110-209enroll before the first class. Page Unity Church Slates Course On Miracles 4 Bible Classes Slated Biblical study classes will be held beginning Oct. 1 by the Utah Institute for Biblical Studies at the Indian Christian Center, 859 S. 800 East. The Utah Institute for Biblical Studies Is an Interdenominational institute, offering college level courses for people who are interested in pursuing biblical studies. The school is evangelical and its statement of faith affirms the basic Christian belief of the Bible as Gods word and affirms the diety of Jesus, said Ken Mulholland, institute president. The statement of faith also affirms belief in the trinity and justification by faith, he said. "Weve also included a statement on the relationship between faith and good works, which says one is saved by faith with the fruits of good works coming later, said the Rev. James Wakefield, a member of the board of directors. Include a Gause The board of directors included the clause, not to be exclusionary to some members of the Church of Jesus Saints or some Christ of Latter-da- y Catholics who do not agree with the statement, but to state our presupposition to let students know where were coming from, the Rev. Mr. Wakefield said, emphasizing the institute wants students from all faiths to enroll. Students do not have to agree with the statement of faith, since the purpose of the institute will be to educate and to share philosophies with the students, the Rev. Mr. Wakefield said. "We want to teach them (the students) to think for themselves biblically. We dont want to teach pat answers, the Rev.
