Show Ministry Is Full-Tim- Job e Businessman Spreads Gospel By Melinda Sowerby Tribune Church Editor-Wha- t was a part-tim- e volunteer effort for Brian Ascherin has become a e position and the change has meant not only a new job, but a major move for the Christian businessman. Mr. Ascherin is the new Metro Di-- I rector of the Christian Businessmens ; Committee. The position had its offi-cibeginnings Sept. 1, but Mr. As-- ! cherin is now traveling between Salt Lake City and Rapid City, S.D., until his home there is sold. i full-tim- al She Salt akr Sribunr OF. IIE. MAYS Churches September Section 8, 1984 Page 16 B Formerly an engineer for a utility company in Rapid City, Mr. Ascherin has been a member of the CBMC for a number of years, spreading the Gospel through his personal ministry. He said he finds his new position exciting because he had proved himself to be a competent engineer in his previous position. He said as an engineer he didn't have to depend upon God to do his job, but in his new position he is dependent on Gods grace. And that too is exciting, Mr. Ascherin said. Focus Tbeir Lives He said his primary responsibility in the new position is to work with businessmen to help them grow spiritually and to assist them in whatever way he can. He wants to encourage local businessmen to focus their lives on honoring and glorifying God. He said be believes his personal ministry is to businessmen, saying the CBMC has an effective presentation of the Gospel. He said he sees no duplication of efforts between CBMC and other Christian organizations devoted to businessmen. The CBMC is not a church. However, Mr. Ascherin sees the committee as a companion organization to churches in carrying out Christs commission. The committee sponsors break- - Anns to Launch Drive For Spiritual Renewal St. RENEW, a nationwide program designed to make people more aware of Christ in their lives, begins with a signup Sunday at SL Anns Catholic Church, 450 E 2100 South. RENEW is being tried at St. Ann's, because the program has had "remarkable success in other areas of the country bringing inactive members back into the fold and enriching the lives of active members, according to the Rev. John J. Sullivan, pastor at St. Anns. Holy Family Church in Ogden was the first church in the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City to program. tty the three-yea- r The name comes from the scriptures, Father Sullivan said, adding that it refers to a spiritual renewal. RENEW offers something for every member, from the very old to the very young; from those who like to be involved to those who either prefer not to participate pr cant, according to Gayen Wharton, publicity coordi- nator for the program. Calling for Members Rev. Sullivan explains RENEW has been developed to make members aware of the question: What is God calling me to do? He noted that God may be catling members to be a better neighbor or to be more active in church. God's calling is different for everyone, he said. The important thing is to discover what God's calling is for you. That recuires more than a superficial approach to discovering ones own feelings. Rev. Sullivan believes. Another aspect stressed in the program i3 that people need each others support. Rev. Sullivan said. Even if you dont need others, others may need vou. INew ; ! Pastor to Join Baptist Church Special to The Tribune A new pastor CLEARFIELD will be installed Sunday at the Clearfield Community Baptist Church, 200 S. 500 East, Clearfield. The installation ceremony for the Rev. Larry W. Dobson will be held at the church at 4 p.m. The Rev. DB. Heusser, intermountain area minister. will be featured speaker during the ceremony. The public is invited to attend. pur (tfunrr to Christ Disobedient to God He believes many people arent experiencing a relationship with God, because theyve been disobedient to God's word. Mr. Ascherin hopes to point out such people can have the abundant life they desire because of Christ's deed of dying on the cross. CBMC members live a lifestyle of evangelism, Mr. Ascherin said. Members change lives through a basis, he said, using the Bible to spread the word. Mr. Ascherin called the Bible the manufacturers handbook, saying if humans had a glove compartment, the Bible would be in it." As the metro director of the CBMC, Mr. Ascherin hopes to help the committee grow in vision and strategy. The position is a new one for Salt Lake City, although the metro program was started in 1980, he said. Personal Ministry He explained CBMC is a participatory committee. Unlike a club, where some members may be active, the committee involves all members In a personal ministry. Members share business experiences at luncheons, integrating their spiritual life, which is an integral part of life, Mr. Ascherin said. He said members then call on businessmen who have attended a luncheon, making themselves available to help. If a member could devote four hours a week to the ministry, a guy could be a tremendous asset in encouraging men to grow in themselves, he said. He believes CBMC members as well as other people ought to invest in some of the things of eternal value. Mr. Ascherin will be speaking Tuesday at Quality Inn, 164 W. 600 South, at a noon luncheon. Active parish members may participate in small groups in which they may share their concerns with others. Topics may include discussing children, the generation gap, honesty in business, widow hood, or the effects of divorce, Rev. Sullivan said. However, he emphasizes the groups will not.be sensitivity sessions. Many are put off by that type of group, he added, . Visit Ilomebound In addition to the small groups, a major focus of RENEW will be home visitations to inactive members and visits to nursing homes and home-boun- d members. Those who are homobound will be given learning materials and will be asked to pray for the parish. "We want them the homebound to know the parish is enriched by their prayers, Mrs. Wharton said. Home visits will also be scheduled for those disenfranchised members of the parish, along with a telephone campaign. Organizers believe there are tender, delicate ways to help those people better understand the church and to bring them back into the fold, Mrs. Wharton said. Well be emphasizing the love Christ has for them, she said, adding she believes many inactive members deep down would like to be religious. They just need someone to ask them. RENEW is scheduled for six weeks in the autumn and six weeks at Lent. During that time, active members will be given materials to take home and visiting teams will deliver the Rev.
