The win stands out, Sampson said after scoring 18 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to help the Rockets defeat San Anto0 nio Saturday. We got one. Were just going to go on to the next I 106-10- one now. Lewis Lloyd, a castoff from the Golden State Warriors, was the real hero for the Rockets, scoring 28 points, including six in the last 2.20, and collecting a rare triple double by also contributing 11 rebounds and assists. The Rockets, who won only 14 of 82 games last season and lost their first 10 games, ushered in the Sampson era before a Summit crowd of 14,116, almost 2,000 less than capacity but nonetheless the largest open- 10 I think I did some of the things I wanted to do and there were some things I didnt do. I mishandled the ball sometimes. The Rockets got off to a quick start against strong opposition in the Spurs, who have won the NBA Midwest Division championship five of the last seven years, and Artis Gilmore, one of the leagues strongest centers. The colleSampson, a three-tim- e of the at Virginia year giate player who signed a four-yea- r, $5 million contract, won his matchup against Gilmore, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. I knew Gilmore would go down low, Sampson said. I just tried to use my height and not leave my feet. 7-- 260-pou- Hes a great pump fake." He played better today than in the exhibition game, no question about it, said Gilmore, who took Sampson inside for 12 points in just 10 minutes in a preseason game Oct. 20. I expected him to do well. Hes an intelligent player. Lloyd, acquired from the Warriors in the offseason for a 1985 second-round draft pick, gave the Rockets the lead for good at 8 on a basket with 2.20 remaining. He then had the next two field goals, the second with a minute to go for a 103-9- 8 margin. In addition to his points and rebounds, Sampson had four blocked shots and three assists. Mike Mitchell led San Antonio scorers with 23 points and George Gervin added 19. The largest lead by either team 9 was seven points by the Spurs in the third quarter. But the Rockets rallied for nine points in a row to keep the see-sagame close to the end. There were 29 lead changes and 13 ties in the game. 99-9- The coaches, Bill Fitch of the Rockets and Moe McHone of the Spurs, were making their debuts with their teams. McHone was an assistant with the Spurs last year while Fitch came over from the Boston Celtics. Fitch started as the Boston coach in 1979 and with the help of another heralded rookie named Larry Bird, led the Celtics to a 1 record after they finished 3 the previous season. Now, in his first season as coach at Houston, he has taken the first step toward another radical turnaround. While Gilmore scored all of his points within a couple of feet of the basket, Sampson maneuvered outside for all but six of his points. He finished by hitting 9 of 21 field goal attempts for 43 percent, including 4 for 11 in the first half, which finished with San Antonio ahead 61-2- 29-5- 54-5- 76-6- w Sampson, who hit only 40 percent of his shots as the Rockets won only one of eight exhibition games, missed his first three field goal attempts. However, the Nets they inability to hit free throws missed 13 in the second half eventually brought them up short. 74-5- 92-8- Hawks 117, Pistons lock llie tie. It was farther irony that Fryer was working the game with Darell Garretson, the only veteran official on the NBA's makeshift staff. Garretson is part of league management as its supervisor of officials, and he has helped the league in developing its staff of substitute refs during the exhibition season while the NBA was locking out the regular refs. To the referees union, Garret-so- n is a scab, as are the others subs. And so it would seem the picketing refs, who made the most of the publicity from the Philly-Bosto- n preseason scuffle as an example of what happens when inexperienced refs are used, couldn't have gotten a greater publicity boost for their cause on opening night than what happened ai the Spectrum. But in other arenas Friday night, there werent so many howls. Certainly, in the Jazzs opener at Denver, there couldnt have been many complaints about the job done by Gary Johnson and Ken Mauer, both of whom officiated in the Continental Basketball Association last year. Although the common complaint, it seems, about the sub refs is that fouls and don't they call ticky-tac- k let the players play, Johnson and Mauer whistled a total of 56 fouls Friday, only six over the average for a game last year. They were distributed equally, and the two officials certainly werent not bending to the home crowd when they called the first five fouls of the fourth quarter on the Nuggets, putting the Jazz in the penalty after only three and a half minutes in what was then a close game. Jazz-Nugge- ts I think the most important thing about the referees is that they remain inconspicuous, said Jazz Coach Frank Layden, repeating the old saw, and thats what happened in our game. They had no effect on the outcome of the game. And, while noting that he didnt see what happened in the Sixers-Bullegame and didnt know the facts surrounding Rulands technical, Layden did have a reaction to e some of the comments ts post-gam- ZJ from Philadelphia that, in effect, went like, You don't make a call like that at that point in the game "In my opinion, I don't think anything should be different at the end of the game than at tf ? beginning of the game, said Layden. "I saw the comments that you don t make a call like that at that time in the game, but I don't think that's true What die you saying that el the end of the game it's all right to intimidate them (the officials)' 1 don t think that's right. But I didn't see the " game While Johnson and Mauer got through their opening game without incident and Fryer and Garretson didnt, former CBA refs Ed Pimpion and Neal Kay were calling 68 personals and four technicals in the e Golden game and Joe Borgia and Barry Rogan were whistling 71 personals and six technicals in the Detroit-Bosto- n game. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, Cary Toone of Salt Lake City worked his first NBA regular-seaso- n game, doing the Cavaliers-Kmck- s game with Matt Braunstein. Toone reffed in the CBA last year and worked in that league's championship series, and he is probably one of the better refs working in the NBA right now. Cavs Coach Tom Nissalke, who is familiar with Toone since Cary has worked some of the Jazz's intrasquad scrimmages in preseason camp over the years, seemed to be satisfied with the officiating in his opener, as he was quoted as saying. I think they missed some calls, but they had the game under pretty good control. They missed a couple of illegal defenses, but I know the one guy (Toone) and hes been a pretty good college official. Toone was going to be a college official again this year, as he had a schedule of WAC and Big Sky games set up, but he had to forfeit them in order to take his shot at the NBA. He is most famous, or infamous, for an incident with former Colorado State Coach Jim Williams four years ago, an incident that contributed to Williams subsequent firing. While Toone and his fellow substitute refs will continue to work under the spotlight, the referees union and the NBA will continue to try to reach an agreement. And no matter how well the new refs perform in the interim, it will be in the best inter- ests of the game to get the matter settled.
