Joe DiPoalo he ing why doesnt consider his size to be a disadvantage. Coaches were kind of reluctant in recruiting me because they thought my size would hurt me. It probably does a little, offered DiPoalo DiPoalo says he can tackle just as good and hard as any linebacker in the conference. And he has the figures to back him up Size doesnt have that much to do with it. Im able to use my quickness to outmaneuver a big offensive line- man rather than taking the guy head on." He said the biggest step up for him from junior to major college football was more mental than physical. Weber State recuited DiPoalo to play outside linebacker, but when he arrived, he was shifted to the inside Despite leading the team in unassisted tackles (57) and assisted tackles (127) last year, DiPoalo feels he wont surpass those totals this season. Im not getting as many tackles as I did last year because our defensive line is playing a lot better. I shouldnt make over 20 tackles a game. He had 19 in a losing cause last week to Montana. He admitted he was a little burned out at the beginning of the year, but a winning season has rekindled the spark of achievement. Winning makes a difference, said DiPoalo. I get keyed up more for games when something is in reach like a conference title. The whole team does. When youre losing you dont want to go to practice. You only play for yourself and not the team. DiPoalo says hes had to learn some new techniques this season for stripping the ball away from opposing running backs. That strategy has already produced four forced fumbles on DiPoalos part. I just come around from behind and slap at the football while Im making the tackle. Weber State Head Coach Mike Price said hes been impressed with DiPoalo since the Santa Barbara, Calif., native joined the team. Its like no ones coached them at all. It seems everyone else is playing freelance. The work of the Wildcats defensive line has made DiPoalos job easier this season. Theyre taking the opposing linemen off the linebackers, thus leaving us free to concentrate on the ball carrier or receiver, he says. DiPoalo said the Wildcats will have to protect against the "long bomb in Saturdays pivotal Big Sky battle with Idaho and NCAA Division passing whiz, Ken Hobart. I dont think its going to be that physical of a game. We just have to stop the long pass. Hobart is a good quarterback for the deep throw, but I dont think hes a great short route quarterback. A freak injury in practice earlier this week left DiPoalo with nine stitches on the knuckles of his right hand. He said a helmet chin strap buckle came loose, struck his hand, ripping it open. He said the injury isnt serious. carrier. d He claims to be very in dealing with his fellow players as team captain. Im not the bossy type of guy. I just kind of let things go. If someone does something wrong I might say something about it, thats all. , The DiPoalo said the biggest transition for him from the junior college ranks was learning the intricate linebacking philosophies at Weber State like footwork and pass drops. DiPoalo said hes had to become more disciplined in his approach to the game. That discipline he attributes to good coaching. I think the coaches have helped me a lot. I feel I have an advantage over a lot of linebackers because of the good coaching. The elder DiPoalo has been a constant spectactor in the stands the past two weeks watching his son perform. And judging from the way his son has produced, Joes father can be proud, very proud. The younger DiPoalo said having his father in the stands doesnt put any extra pressure on him other than his being there. It helps me play better. I think I play better under pressure. I need pressure to play good. I need someone to push me like my dad. Upon graduation, DiPoalo would like to enter the coaching profession. But his primary thoughts now are fixed on winning a Big Sky title n tournaand perhaps a ment berth for the Wildcats. DiPoalo is the teams defensive captain this season. He earned that honor for his tenacity on the field and his aggressive play. He has the knack of locating the ball carrier and striking him down. His leadership qualities are said to be by action rather than words. One of DiPoalos biggest attributes is his lateral movement to the football. Hes able to slide along the line of scrimmage and react with the quickness of a wink to the ball frulaj r, rd-center.
