Th( fact that Gaztambide has a 3.79 grade point average while taking a demanding schedule of classes that includes five honors courses makes her athletic achievements all the more impressive Many folks are calling her the best woman athlete in Utah this year, and a good case could he made for that argument. Consider the fact that Denise was recently selected as a member of the Girls Team by the Prep National High School Coaches Association. Throw in the fact that she led the Bulldogs to a region title and fourth place state finish in basketball. Add the knowledge that she took the Bulldogs' volleyball team to second in region and eighth in state. Then, look at her track accomplishments. The people who recruited her at Stanford told Denise that, if Utah had a heathlon competition, the times and distances she has turned in this year would put her in the top five in the country. She has qualified for six events in state," said Nadeen Hutson, one of Denise's coaches at Judge "She set four new pentathlon records at RYU and set the total pentathlon record She could come close to qualifying in stale for every single track event." Can Do Better Denise looks at these accomplishshe ments and. in typical style, thinks she can do better in the future "I wasn't thinking ahout attending Stanford," she says "But Brooks Johnson, who will he the Olympic womens coach, contacted me Academics are important to me, and Stanford has a fine reputation I liked the campus and the w eather. She knows the fact that Johnson is the women's U S. Olympic track coach will help make that dream come true. Gaztambide w ill concentrate on track at Stanford, though he admit that there i a deire to play on the sihonl'- - vollevball team, which finished eighth in the nation a year ago.
