Probably the experts say But if it keeps making "come backs" it will be here a lot longer than most of us think Since 1941 the lake has been rising gradually reports Ralf R Woolley U S Geological Survey member of the committee on lakes American Geophysical union But as yet the 'rise has not been sufficient to offset the downward trend which began in 1924 Averaging up the last 40 years the lake still is below the mean of 4199 feet above sea level On Jan 1 this year the' level was 41968 feet approximately seven inches higher than the previous year Since 1941 the lake has been rising at a rate of SIX inches yearly But this increase is not sufficient to change the fact that for the period in which records to 194E- 3-have been kept-1- 850 of of trend the altitude the lake's surface has been downward at the rate of one foot every 10 years Highest altitude reached by the lake during the period indicatelton the chart was 42041 in 1924 The lake surface then was 49 feet above the mean Jan 1 level and 102 feet highet than the lowest Jan 1 in 1936 The lake's level this year is the highest it has teen for 11 Mr Woolley said but still lacks 26 feet of being normal Best available data shows the highest Jan 1 lake surface since the pioneers came into the valley at approximately 4211 feet for the year 1874 This is nearly seven feet higher than the highest stage reached in the last 40 years 40-ye- ar -
