Des Plaines Police Chief Lee Alfano said three bodies had been discovered so far. Police dismantled part of the house to see if more bodies could be found. The Chicago Tribune reported that unidentified police investigators said Gacy had made an oral statement that he had strangled 32 young boys. However, repeated checks with various authorities were unable to confirm the report. The search was to continue Saturday. 2 Coast Officers Slain, Lawmen Seek Suspect ' - issued Thursday in Vallejo and found at the murder scene. Both officers were shot in the head. One was handcuffed and killed by a shot fired point-blanThier service revolvers were missing, investigators said. A highway patrol officer at the scene said, this was an execution, pure and simple. Weapons Found The dead officers were Roy Blecher, 50, and William Michael Freeman, 35, both assigned to the Woodland office. Although their weapons were misand a sing, two handguns were found nearby. Sgt. Larry Justus, a Yolo County Sheriffs deputy on patrol near the busy freeway, Route 80, where the officers were killed, said he heard between four and six shots fired through the foggy darkness about 3:45 a.m. A few minutes later Justus found the bodies lying face down on the shoulder of the eastbound lane of the freeway, three miles west of the capitol. The red lights on the patrol car were still flashing, he said. Blecher was a veteran of 21 years on the force with most of the time served in Los Angeles. Freeman served 12 years. Both were married, both were fathers. The last radio contact with the officers was at 3:12 a.m., when they spoke with a dispatcher in Sacramento. However, they gave a different location from the freeway exit near where their car was found. Investigators at the scene said evidence, including the way their cruiser was parked, indicated the two officers were making a routine traffic stop. The killings brought to 147 the number of California Highway Patrol officers killed in the line of duty since 1929. Seven died this year, but all but Freeman and Blecher died in accidents. Deputy Highway Patrol Commissioner Gerry Clemons said a motorist tola officers he saw a man emerge from a stopped car and approach the patrol cruiser. Associated Press Writer A RIDGE, Guyana Guyanese coroners inquest ruled Friday that the Rev. Jim Jones and others were criminally responsible for the deaths of 910 persons at the Peoples Temple commune of Jonestown and that Jones was murdered. The jury of four men and one woman decided only one cultist committed Aim Moore, Jones personal suicide nurse. Foreman Albert Graham, 62, said the jury did not have enough evidence to fix responsibility in the deaths of two other persons. Committed Suicide? The initial jury finding said Jones, whose body was found with a bullet wound in the head, committed suicide. But after a tirade by the magistrate in charge, Haroon Bacchus, the jury concluded he was killed by some person or persons unknown. The jury's finding, comir.g on the sixth day of the inquiry that began Dec. 13, closes the only official Guyanese inquiry into the deaths at Jonestown. Another inquiry is under way into the deaths of Rep. Leo J. Ryan, and four other persons killed on an airstrip outside Jonestown earlier that day. Ryan was investigating the cult. The finding enables the government to begin issuing death certificates for the persons who died in Jonestown Nov. 18 and is expected to speed release of the bodies from a military morgue at Dover, Del., Air Force Base. Death Certificates We've arranged extra people to write the death certificates and they should get started on it by Sunday, said Guyanese Public Prosecutor Emanuel Romao "We will send them out in batches as soon as possible and the (U.S.) embassy plans to pick them up right away. The jury ruled almost exactly as suggested by Bacchus, who in his summation told the Jurors they should moke up their own minds I would ask you to say Jim Jones and his associates, which would include his medical team, murdered those persons," Bacchus said after citing testimony showing Jones kept cultists under armed guard, told them they should die with dignity" and ordered babies poisoned. t The most pathetic thing in this whole exercise was this woman, Christine Miller, pleading for her life and this man saying, She was not the one to decide ... all the while saying he had supernatural powers. "You give ptjople poison and don't know they're going t? die? Bacchus said. MATTHEWS - When the jury filed back into the courtroom after being sequestered 18 minutes, Graham rose and said, James Warren Jones died by suicide. What evidence do you have to Bacchus shouted, support suicide? rising to his feet with the prosecutor. Bacchus said government pathologist Dr: Leslie Mootoo stated that Jones was shot at close range in the side of the head, but that the gun was found 20 yards away. He said this was inconsistent with zhe jurys finding and suggested more deliberation. The jury, drawn from residents of this tiny jungle village 150 miles northwest of Georgetown, near Jonestown, trudged back to the jury room. They filed out 11 minutes later and A woman SALEM, Ore. (UPI) testified Friday at the trial of a man accused of raping his wife that the victim, Greta Rideout, called police from under a kitchen table and was frightened, crying and incoherent just after the attack. Sharon Ann Dolan, a neighbor of John and Greta Rideout, said Mrs. Rideout came to her house Oct. 10 and said John had gotten to her. Mrs. Dolan testified, when talking with police and somebody else (on the telephone) she was under my kitchen table. She was scared. She was crying. She was incoherent. Rideout, 21, a restaurant cook from Silverton, is the first man in the country to stand accused of raping his wife under a 1977 state law. He is free on $5,000 bail. Resumes Tuesday four-ma- n The jury was excused early and told to return Tuesday when the trial will resume. Defense lawyer Charles Burt said he would advise Rideout to testify next week. An employee of the Salem womens crisis center, Helen Biebelheimer, testified out of the jurys presence that Mrs. Rideouts face was swollen up, her eye was black and blue. Her face was a real mess on the left side just after the alleged rape. eight-woma- - ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (UPI) The FBI Frieday announced the arrest in Acworth, Ga., of Richard Robard Hughes, 33, a fraud suspect who had claimed he was the illegitimate son of the late Howard Hughes. Hughes, 33, was sought on warrants charging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. The FBI said the federal fraud charges were filed in connection with a Sandoval County, N.M., case in which he allegedly represented himself as Howard Hughes son to convince a couple to give him more than 115,000 to gain access to a trust fund set up by the billionaire. Blanton issued a statement after his I grand jury appearance, saying, answered all question'1 the jury put to him. He refused, h ;r, to answer reporters questions. Mrs. Rideout, 23, was staying at Mrs. Biebelheimers Salem home at the time. One Little Bruise He said she (Mrs. Rideout) had only one little bruise above her eye, Mrs. Biebelheimer testified. He said he hit her a couple of times but had not raped her. Earlier, a family friend, Jennie Reich, 20, described Mrs. Rideout as an honest person who was her friend. Mrs. Reich Under said Mrs. Rideout was honest about everything but sex. She also denied having a homosexual affair with Mrs. Rideout. Burt asked Mrs. Reich, If Greta Rideout said under oath that she told John (Rideout) you and 'she had a homosexual affair, would that change your opinion of her honesty? 27 cross-examinati- Graham announced: Some person or persons unknown is clearly responsible for the deaths of James Warren Jones. Cyanide Poisoning Testimony showed the 910 persons died of acute cyanide poisoning. The jury also concluded Ann Moore died by a gunshot wound and that his mistress, Maria Katsaris, drank the brew.' Mrs. Reich answered, I know why she told him that. She was baiting him. Of course it was a lie. In earlier testimony. Jack Hinkle, Rideout's half brother, said he told Mrs. Rideout that what she was doing was not fair, especially since she was getting a divorce. The jury did not rule on whether Miss Katsaris, the cults financial secretary, committed suicide or was murdered. Graham said, James Warren Jones and others unknown are criminally responsible for the deaths of 910 persons. Judy Mayo, 27, a half sister to Rideout and Hinkle, testified that Mrs. Rideout had said Jack (Hinkle) forced her to have sex. What kind of sex I dont know." Another witness, Douglas Lowe, 24, testified that Mrs. Rideout had once denied to her husband in Lowes presence that she had sex with Hinkle. Governor Has 4Nothing to Hide Gov. NASHVILLE, Tenn. Confessed Strangling Authorities said Gacy confessed Thursday to strangling Robert Piest, 15, of Des Plaines. Gacy was being held without bond. Authorities said that Gacy, twice divorced and living alone, was convicted in Iowa in 1968 of sex crimes, served time and was paroled in 1971. He had lived in the home where the bodies where discovered for six years and operated a contracting business from it. The dwelling is in a quiet residential neighborhood in an unincorporated part of Norwood Park Township, northwest of Chicago, a mile from Schiller Park Forest Preserve. Part of the three bedroom house was being dismantled for easier access to the crawl space, which is 4 feet deep and measures about 30 by 40 feet. Cook County Sheriff Richard Elrod said Gacy is giving all kinds of statements." Elrod said Gacy had claimed there was a body here. A body there and that they had been dumped in the lake or a lagoon or were buried. There had been rumors that as many as 20 bodies might be found, and Elrod said its possible." But Alfano said such a count seems very high, but I have no way of disputing that at this time. Officers were first alerted on Dec. 11 when the Piest youth was reported missing and was linked to Gacy by the boys mother, Alfano said. Gacy was kept under surveillance until officers, armed with a search warrant, entered the house Thursday night.
