Show The Salt Lake Tribune SPORTS Wednesday, May 21, 1997 IOC: Jones’ Seoul Bout Not Fixed BY MIKE GORRELL ‘THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE MONTE CARLO — TheInternational Olympic Committee (10C) has decided the gold-medal fight that American boxer Roy —Jones Jr. lost to a Korean at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul was not fixed and that no further investi. gationis necess; I0C director general Fienrow Carrard said Tuesday that an in- vestigation, launched last sum- mer at the request of the U.S, an. zl . tam, re six was, to them, the high cost of food But there was no causeforanofficial investigation until the demise of East Germanyled to the open- ing of the files of the Stasi, the communist government's secret police. Documents there suggested a judge was paid by the Games organizers to help Korean fightrs Larbi also had been quoted by Olympic Committee, revealed “no evidence of any corruption in boxing in Seoul.” The decision was based largely on an official statement that Car- one publication as saying he was rard personally received in March denied ever speaking to a journalist aboutthe bout. Larbi acknowl- Hun in his split decision victory through the African Confederation of Boxing. But he explained from Moroccan boxing judge Hiouad Larbi, whocastoneof two votes for Korean boxer Park Siover Jones. ashamed of the decision against Jones. Carrard said that when he interviewed Larbi, the Moroccan edged receiving $300 in American money from Games organizers and housing in Seoul. The IOCofficial said he had no reason to doubt Larbi’s statement, adding thatStasi files were filled with “rumors and unverified allegations.” USOC executive director Dick Schultz said the ruling was disappointing but not unexpected. “We thought there was a good chance, but there are twosides to every picture,” he said. “It was a tossup until they got the informa- tion from the judge ... In my mind, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.”” Schultz noted that USOC offi- cials never had asked the IOC to take away the Korean’s gold med- al, but had requested an additional gold for Jones.
