Show I PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS' RETIREMENT COMMISSION OP SALT LAKE CITY . I Three hundrod and thirty ot the 434 teachers and principals of the public schools of Salt Lake City havo accepted membership in tho public school teachers teach-ers ' retirement commission, created by tho board of education at a meeting held April 7 this year, under tho provisions pro-visions of an act passed by tho last legislature. The deducting of 1 per cent from tho monthly snlarv' of each teacher, supervisor, super-visor, principal or superintendent, and setting such deduction apart for tho commission, as provided by tho law authorizing au-thorizing the creation of such an association, asso-ciation, would bring more than $3000 to the fund the first year of its existence, ex-istence, D. II. Christcnsen, superintendent superintend-ent of city schools, estimates. Of the romaining 10-i who havo not accepted membership in the commission, tho majority are crcpected to make application ap-plication before tho winter is over, raising rais-ing the total membership to 400 aud over. It also is intended to extend the organization into the rural districts and include the teachers throughout the state in the membership. . . There aro two classes of beneficiaries. Any member of the commission who has taught in the district, or county in which the district is located at least five years and whose term of service aggregates thirty years may bo retired upon an annual pension amounting to one-half of the average annual salary flvflivn hv siinli tenfther for tho five vears preceding retirement, but in caso of such teacher not having taught an aggregate ag-gregate of thirty years he or sho may bo-temporarily retired and shall be entitled en-titled to as many thirteenths of the half salary as his or her ycar3 of service are a part of thirty. Under this provision it is interesting to uoic that, almost 200 teachers in the public schools of Salt Lake City are cligiblo to become beneficiaries of tho fund provided by the commission. Twenty-sis teachers in the high school aud 101 in the elementary schools have scon livo years and more of service, while eight in the high school and fifty in the elementary have taught twelve years aud more. "Si:c in tho high school and fifteen in the elementary schools have seen moro than fifteen years of service, while nine teachers in tho high school have taught eighteen years and over, just how much is not known, as tho high school was organized sovcral years aftor 1S90, back to which the maximum max-imum period of eighteen years of service dates. These nine teachers who havo spent almost a quarter of a century each in the public school rooms of Salt Lake City are: E. S. Halloek. Mattie Porter, "Eva Lloyd, Emma Bledsoe, W. W. Barton, William Bradford. Jano M. Carney, Fred D. Parker aud Mattie E. McKay. In commenting iu his annual report upon tho law. Superintendent D. H. Chrislenscn of the city schools says: "This law is second only to the ones creating the free schools, consolidating the districts of this city and providing free books. They wero constructive in nature and practically made our public school system in lta present efficiency possible. Chapter 111 (authorizing the creating of the retirement commission) is perhaps the only law on our statute books enacted exclusively iu behalf of tho teacher, and it bids well to become an epoch-making power in the schools of the city.' Acting under tho law tho teachers of tho city met at the free public library May 14. this year, and elected the following fol-lowing to membership in tho commission: commis-sion: William Bradford, for a term of three years; Miss Frances Qualtrough, for a term of two years; Mrs. Retta Casadj. for a term of ono year. At a regular meeting of the board of education educa-tion held June 2H, this 3'enr, President Henderson appointed James T. Ham-nioud Ham-nioud aud Byron Cummings, member of tho board of education, to membership in the commission. On September 15 the members of the commission met and organized permanently by electiu? Mr. Hammond chairman and L. P. Judd. clerk of the school board, secretary. These persons, together with the superintendent super-intendent of schools, an ex-oflicio member, mem-ber, constitute tho first public school teachers' retirement commission in Utah: Ablfott, Mamie Brown.
