Marshalled in eight columns on tho Victoria embankment embank-ment a grent army of from 12,000 to 1;,000 women suffragists paraded tho metropolis this afternoon and wound up with a meeting at Albert hall at which such well-known women as Dr. Anna Shaw. Lady Henr3' Somerset and Lady Frances Balfour voiced tho de-mnnd de-mnnd of women for an immediate extension exten-sion of the franchise. Fifteen bands of music enlivened the parade and nearly n thousand banners were homo by the different contingents. Tho great procession was swelled in Trafalgar square by several thousand barmnids. who had been demonstrating against, tho licensing bill. This the barmaids bar-maids aver threatens to deprivo them of their livelihood. All sorts of women took part in tho march and united in thc common cause of woman suffrage. Beatrice Harrideu, Elizabeth bobbins, Lady Onslow, Mrs. Alfred Lyttloton and Gertrudo Kingston Kings-ton wero among the more notable women wom-en who marched at tho head of the different dif-ferent soctions. Dr. Anna Shaw and Miss Lucy J. Anthony, delegates from the United States, led the procession in carriages. Tho second landau contained con-tained Mrs. Catherino MeCulloch of Evanstou, 111.; Mrs. Stewart, president of the Illinois Suffrago association, aud Mr. Medley of New York. Tho thousands thou-sands of spectators who lined the route of march generally were sympathetic. At the conclusion of Jier speech in Albert hall, Dr. Anna Shaw rccoived a remarkable ovation. She suid that slio was delighted to help English women in their warfare and that when tho women of England were free from their bondage they should go over and help the Americans, for their assistnuce would bo required. Notable among the bannors on the platform in the hall was the Stars and Stripes, bearing the name of Susan B. Anthony, while among tho floral tributes was a shield representing the Stars and Stripes sent from Washington. |
