I Special to The Tribune. LOGAN, Aug. 11. John F. and Alice Penn Maiben Squires of this city celebrated their golden wedding Wednesday, Auguat 7, at their home. Their children and grandchildren grand-children formed the greater part of the gathering. Mr. and Mrs. Squires are pioneers, having hav-ing arrived In Salt Lake Cttv with their parents in 1S53. They crossed the sea and plains together and have known each other from childhood. Mrs. Squires walked most the way from I the Missouri river to Salt Lake Citv, notwithstanding the fact that ahe was under 6 years of age. Mr. Squires gave out along the route and had to be carried. car-ried. They passed through the grasshopper famine in the '50s and know what it is to go without bread for weeks at a time. During the move south. Mr. Squires drove a pig from Salt Lake Citv to Nephi, a distance of ninety-eight miles. He says: "There is nothing strenuous in driving a pig out of one's yard or across the street, but when you drive one that distance it makes a lasting impression." Mr. Squires also is a Black Hawk war veteran, having served under the late Mayor Andrew Burt in 1856. Mr. and Mrs. Squires are the parents of twelve children, nine of whom are still living. They also have twenty-six grandchildren. |
