Romantic ANNOUNCEMENT is made of the marriage of Miss Gladys Hendy of San Jose, Cal., to lieutenant Rex-ford Rex-ford Shores, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Shores, formerly of Salt Lake and now of Los Angeles. Cal. The ceremony was performed' bv the Rev. J. J. N. Kennev of St. Paul's Methodist church, at San Jose. Then Die bride telephoned to her father telling of the wedding. Miss Hendy drove Lieutenant Shores f'-om Camp Fremont in her automobile to the county clerk's office of-fice after closing hours and obtained a marriage license from R. K. O'Neil, dennty county clerk. They sought a minister, and it was i nearly 11 o'clock when they were able to arouse the Rev. Mr. Kenney, after several unsuccessful attempts. Mr. and Mrs. MPton McCarthy of San Jose, friends of the bride, were witnesses. T .fen tenant Shores was a graduate of the Second Reserve Officers' Train-in Train-in camp. Formerly he was a Los Angeles attorney. His father is a prominent physician of Los Angeles. He has known his bride for about two months. A garden party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ren net t at their home on "Eighth 15a st street and Princeton avenue last evening. Dancing was enjoyed on the lawn, which was decorated in flags of America a nd the a (lies, and lighted with electric lights shaded with Japanese lanterns. A punch table was set In a bower of goldenglow. ' Supper was served in the house from small tables, arranged around a large serving tah'e in the dining room. Patriotic Patri-otic decorations were used. A tall vase of red gladioli was the centerpiece for the serving table. Hed ribbons extended from the chandelier, Intertwined with smilax. Silver candelabra, holding red candles, -were at the ends of the table. Winker baskets of red sweet peas were jjPt the center of the small tables. The reception room was decorated In pink sweet peas and asters. The living room was adorned with coreopsis in rich golden and brown shades. Music was furnished by the May An-V An-V , at the church formerly occupied by the St. Paul's Episcopal congregation. sje Among those leaving Salt Lake for Yellowstone Yel-lowstone and Glacier parks the past' week were Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Heathcoat of Florida, Mr. and Mrs. S. Q. Ryder of Cincinnati, Ohio; Miss V. Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Athol Rawlins, W. M. Miss Julia Shores, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Shores, has returned from a visit to Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Sanford have left for a motor trip to San Francisco, where they will make their home for the durv tion of the war. Mr. Sanford will be in government service in San Francisco. Mrs. Charles H. Talmage has returned from a seven weeks' trip to the Pacific coast. Mrs. F. Ft Dalton and two daughters. Miss Margaret Dalton and Miss Lenore Dalton, have gone to Humiston, Iowa, to isit relatives. The Misses Dalton, who were graduated from the East high school last June, will go to Chicago to enter the University of Chicago the coming school term. Their mother will spend the winter win-ter in Chicago with them. Miss Gertrude Almond and Miss Becky Almond, accompanied by Miss Aline Phil-ban Phil-ban and. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Neiswender, have gone for a two weeks' automobile tour of Yellowstone. One hundred and twenty-five invitations were issued. News of the marriage of Miss Jean Johnston, formerly of this city and recently re-cently of California, and Fredericlc Van der Zee of Buitenzorg, Java, which took place in Java, July 26, will be read with interest by friends of the bride in Salt Lake. An Ontario, Cal., paper has the following account of an entertainment given for the bride just previous to her sailing for her new home: , At the home of Mrs. C. B. Dossing-er, Dossing-er, 221 East D street, a group of friends gathered to say good-bye to Miss Jean Johnston, of North Palm avenue. Miss Johnston sails for Buitenzorg, Java, on the 26th inst.,' to become the bride of Frederick Van der Zee. The guests gathered on the pretty green 'lawn in front of the Dosslnger home. As twilight approached, the guests led Miss Johnston into the house, blindfolded her, and conducted her to the dining room. When the 'blindfold" was removed, Miss Johnston John-ston was astonished as she beheld a "sea of glass," surrounded by shores of verdant green, upon which was sailing the good ship "Kawi," which will bear her to the isle in the Dutch East Indies. The ship was laden with gifts for the bride, and as the guests grouped themselves about the table. Miss Johnston unwrapped parcel after parcel, par-cel, "all decked in bridal array," each containing a daintily embroidered article ar-ticle of wearing apparel, or some useful use-ful gift for the home in Java. Miss Johnston is well known in Ontario, On-tario, having for several years been , associated with the export department of the Hotpolnt company. She la also well known In musical circles, having been a member of Christ church choir ' for a good part of the time during her residence in this city. Her beautiful beau-tiful contralto voice has also been heard frequently in many other Ontario On-tario churches, at charitable bazaars, and in many homes. ' Mr. Van der Zee has charge of one of the large tea plantations at Buitenzorg. Buiten-zorg. and visited friends here before returning to Java over a year ago. Mrs. Van der Zee , is a sister of Mrs. Arthur J- Fagergren, 642 Twelfth Bast street, thts city. She is a former University Uni-versity or" Utah student and a graduate of Emerson College of Oratory, Boston. . Much social interest centers in the coming com-ing of the Right Honorable Countess of Kingston to Salt Iake next week In the interest of disabled Irish soldiers and sailors. The countess will arrive Monday Mon-day and will remain for one week. Definite Def-inite plans have not yet been made for the entertainment of the distinguished visitor. Functions both large and small, however, of a simple nature, in keeping with the wartime spirit, will be arranged in her honor. ' ! The marriage of Miss Daisy Harrison and Walter Gordon Cook took place last night at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Harrison, on S street. The ceremony was performed ot 7 o'clock by Dr. Elmer I. Goshen. An informal reception followed. Dr. and Mrs. P. G. Cornish of Albuquerque. Albu-querque. N. M.. who have been at (he Hotel Utah for several days, were guests of Mrs. Gladys Henderson at Saltair last niizht and were entertained at dinner by Mrs. Henderson Sunday evening at her home on Uamona avenue. They will leave for their home today by automobile. Mrs. M. M.
