Heres how one mother gained her sons cooperation early in the morning, and relieved herA typ self of painful ordeal: ical morning at home: Glenn, get up Youll be late Glenn get dressed. You'll miss the school bus. Hurry and finish your breakfast." Such a morning routine left Mother upset and exhausted Glenn simply took his time The more Mother rushed him. f' Dr. Ginotl She gave him his own alarm clock. Unbelievably. he was up before the alarm went rff. got dressed, came for breakfast, ate, got his coat on and left for school without any maternal prodding. It is better for all concerned if a child is awakened by an alarm clock rather than by an alarmed mother. Surprising Results we respond to our toddlers as to intelligent, sensitive persons, the results are 2 Mirk often surprising stood up on a chair at a friend's house. At home, he is allowed to do so. When the slower he became. Mother to decided her change approach and shift to her son the responsibility for getting to kindergarten on time. Mother said, quietly. Mark, at Debbie's house chairs are only for sitting." To everybody's surprise, he sat down. Mother did well to invite Mark's cooperation by defining the use of an object. She gave information, not criticism or orders. (Sit down! You'll ruin the chair! ) Her kind voice and words solved what could have become an ordeal. Offer Options When a child refuses a rea sonable request, it is best not to reason with him. but to offer options. He resists us less when he has something to say about his life. Example: Billy, 3. woke up coughing. Mother went in to give him some cough syrup. He refused to take it. Mother said: You can take it in your room or in the bathroom." He decided to take his cough syrup in the bathroom. Then he went back to bed. without complaints. his choice Giving Billy turned an unhappy situation moment: into a pleasant Whenever possible, a child should be allowed to exercise his right to make decisions for himself. For manv families whose all the time about welfare Glenns responded sooner to the Granted, welfare has its problems, but it seems to me that the problem is more a result of systematic inadequacies than intent on the part of recipients to get something for nothing. Since welfare is one of the more visible uses for taxpayers' money, it seems to be one of the mam for complaints scapegoats aboul high taxes, the declining economy, food shortages, ad infinitum. A reception was given at the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Maynard M. Sorensen, Salt Lake City. The Lion House was setting for the wedding breakfast. The bride graduated from Brigham Young University where she was in the Honors Program, was a member of Philharmonic Orchestra and spent a semester in Salzburg, Austria. More Is Spent Considerably more is spent on foreign and domestic security, for example. I would like to see us get away from the image of the welfare recipient as an unscrupulous shyster who drives a big car. wears flashy clothes and squanders public money on luxuries, or an unmarried mother who has a baby every year so that she can get a larger welfare check. The bridegroom, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert V. Stirling, Salt Lake City, graduated from BYU. He is studying for a masters degree at the University of Utah. Johnson-Elliso- n Susan Lynn Johnson and Thomas Alan Ellison were maimed Tuesday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alan B. Blood. Kaysville, uncle and aunt of the bridegroom. Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. George Henry Johnson, Salt Lake City. The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. David J. Ellison, Salt Lake City. I have spent more than One could easily spend that amount on food alone. High Prices secondly, many of us don't realize how many welfare recipients pay exorbitant prices for housing. It is not unusual Cor a ghetto dweller to pay in excess of $100 tenmonthly for a three-rooement. Unfortunately, there are not near enough housing developments to house poor Americans at a reasonable cost, say 25 percent of a family's income. I applaud the fact that Salt Lake is building additional units of this type; I also notice that the size of the waiting list is incredible. Welfare recipients do share a load of the tax burden, most, if not all welfare monies go right back into the national economy. Basic necessities, like food and clothing, This concept has been proposed time and time again with little success Why? It certainly isn't because people don't want employment The astounding attendance record of federally sponsored job and will programs attest to that fact. The real reason seems to be that it is more expensive to develop a job market for a sizable number of semiskilled and unskilled laborers than it is to pay them not to work. The moral of the welfare story is, you get what you pay for. DIAMOND SALE Continues thru August 31st Now is your chance to really save on quality diamonds.
