dnve a Manual transmission without gnnding gears or riding the clutch to nde a bicycle or a unicycle to build a stone wall providing not only a property marker but a thing of beauty to sound out words so she could read herself to use a dictionary or encyclopedia to answer her questions to clean his tools she learned to use so each would be ready when she or he next needed them to enjoy the simple pleasure of walking to look for the bolts on the monsters neck so she wasnt scared any more when the fright movie seemed just too much Sam was one of those individuals who went about his business quietly His life appeqred outwardly sedate but he had a full and vaned life He completed his formal education in Salt Lake City but those were difficult times he went to work to help support his parents and siblings He learned the building and construction business working in lumberyards and with builders When the Second World War started he joined the Navy as a carpenter's mate and spent most of his three years from 1942 to 1945 on land doing shipbuilding and repair ot California ports word came down that any sailor had to do some time at sea so he did his duty in pnsoner transport It s just as well he didn t have to spend a lot of time at sea while he was a strong elegant swimmer he suffered from seasickness Pnor to the war he had served two hitches in the Civilian Conserve tion Corps even though he believed he wasnt an adventurer he left nis safe and known world and sought this opportunity tor new sights Sam enjoyed the companionship of his religion He served faithfully in several positions Of note are his years as a missionary serving in a Salt Lake LDS Stoke mission especially as the service came after long days walking miles as he delivered the mail he retired from the U S Postal Service in 1978 He faithfully served for eight years from 1989 until shortly before his death at the Salt Lake Temple And finally on the evening of January 4 1998 he was released os
