Show up irtygjl Cook’s Busy Minding Salt Lake Area Obituaries llis Own Business Vrea Deallut Bnl Says Tax Crusade Is Far From Over By Mirhael Whitt Associated Press Writer Merrill Cook is at a crossroads in his highly successful business career but there Is little question about his political future Despite four losing campaigns for public office he wants to be Utah’s governor After collecting 21 percent of the vote as an independent candidate for governor this year Cook says his crusade to cut taxes and shrink state government isn't over 1 know I've got another loss to notch up and losses don t help you but 1 feel — I don’t know if it s going to be four years or 12 years — but I’m going to be governor of this state because I'm In touch with the people of Utah" Cook said In an interview The only thing that would keep him out Cook said is a major change in the leadership and philosophy of the Utah Republican Party He wants party leaden to support a significant tax cut and loosen their control over the selection of candidates He expects neither change to occur For the next few weeks however Cook’s energies will be devoted to Cook Slurry Co a liquid explosives firm he with his father chemist Melvin roots but I think by January or certainly after the legislative session we ll know if that would be a good idea" Cook also hopes to spend less of his o n money next time About half of the 1400 000 spent on his gubernatorial campaign came from his own pocket and he spent several hundred thousand dollars of his own money on losing campaigns for the state board of education the Salt Lake County Commission and mayor of Salt Lake City However he said he would spend the money again if necessary ‘I don’t look forward to putting up my own money but if I get Involved again it's likely I probably will" he said "Certainly next time if there is a next time I’d like to have more money from donations" Cook said he remains convinced that someone must break the GOP’s hold on the slate He still smarts from U S Sen Jake Garn’s strong of Gov Norm Bangerter support for the who won the three-warace with 40 percent of the vote Democrat Ted Wilson came m second with 38 y percent But for the Bupport from Gam Bangerter’s campaign chairman and other members of the GOP establishment the governor would have been challenged more aggressively for the nomination Cook said Industrialist Jon Huntsman entered the race briefly but despite strong support he dropped out after a month citing business reasons “The only reason Bangerter won was he was propped up by a United States senator" Cook said Cook said he plans to lobby this winter for a proposal to eliminate the sales tax on food The cut was proposed by the Tax Limitation Coalition of Utah which sponsored three unsuccessful initiatives and endorsed Cook for governor Cook said a campaign to remove the food tax could movement Demolure moderates to the crats have supported such proposals in past sessions of the Legislature “One thing we’ve got to do is get a few of those people on our side and that might be possible if you show a more moderate side get away from the extremes" Cook said "Issues like taking the sales tax off food could do that" Cook Cook said he is deciding whether to sell the firm or expand with a new plant in Florida where stone quar- ries are increasing their use of liquid explosives If Cook opts for expansion the plant would become the company’s fourth in the United States Others are in Utah Minnesota and Wyoming A fifth plant in Mexico is owned independently but is licensed to use slurry methods and equipment developed by Cook and his father Despite rumors to the contrary Cook said he doesn’t plan to move to Florida even if the plant opens Cook said that whether Cook Slurry is sold depends on the offers that come in for the firm and whether it appears the company can garner a big enough share of the Florida market If he runs for office agam Cook plans to do things differently He is considering forming an independent party to promote his philosophy of limited taxation and greater government efficiency He will decide whether to create the party early next year
